What is intellect? It is the power of knowing, including reasoning and other cognitive skills. In addition, it is the power as distinguished from the power to feel and to will. The level of intellect is often called as IQ (intelligence quotient), and its contrary, that is the power to feel and to will, is often called as EQ (emotion quotient). The two figures can basically reveal a person's character. However, we have to admit the fact that most people, including parents, teachers, or employers, are all mainly care the former while overlook the latter, which have brought many problems to the society. Thus, we can say that the author's opinion is totally wrong; in fact, society has placed too much emphasis on the intellect and should transfer some emphasis to the emotion.
Most children, since born, are educated passively. They are told repeatedly that knowledge is power and without knowledge they can hardly survive in the society, and so forth. Everyone regard the intellect so seriously that people often first ask how about his IQ when a child is mentioned. At schools, intellectual students are more likely to be praised by teachers; at companies, individuals with high IQ are more possible to get the offers from employers. As intellect is so emphasized by the whole society, parents have to try their best to let their children received good education, and besides, they send the children to many kinds of training classes, such as painting, singing, dancing, piano, and the like. Admittedly, their wish is beautiful, and they want their children to be more competitive in the society. Unfortunately, the effect of parents' efforts is often unsatisfactory. The children have to endure great press and every day they are busy developing their intellect, whether forwardly or forcedly.
As the energy of parents and society is limited, so with the great emphasis on intellect, the emphasis on feeling or emotion, which is the contrary of intellect, is nearly blank, especially in some developing countries, such as in China. On the one hand, to live a good life is not an easy thing, and parents have to be busy with their careers to feed the family, thus they have little energy to think about the children's psychology. On the other hand, at most schools, there is no special psychology class for students, and under the great employ pressure and the extent of intellect be strengthened by employers, the teachers have to utilize any time to teach students more knowledge. Thus, the children's emotion is neglected by the society and the result is that more and more children have mental problems because of the press, failure, and etc. A recent survey shows that every year there are near a million of young people commit suicide, and it is a shocking fact that can reveal the consequence of overlooking emotion.
Still, with the developing of society, life is much better, and parents or society have time to consider the increasing mental problems. We are delighted to find that many improvements have been done. Now more and more parents are not any longer expecting their children to be a famous or successful person, however, they would rather their children grow up healthily, whether physically or mentally. More and more companies consider not only a student’s grade, but also whether he can cooperate and get along well with others. The whole society has begun to propagandize the importance of emphasizing on EQ by all kinds of medias. This is a dramatic progress and I believe IQ and EQ will be equally emphasized by the society in the future.
To sum up, we can conclude that the author's standpoint is false, and society should place equal emphasis on intellect and emotion, which is more beneficial to individuals, families, and finally the whole society. |
