As the science and technology have being developed rapidly, people's lives are replete with various technological implements, among which television has served as an increasingly important assistant in entertainment as well as study, as the author asserts in the issue. At the same time, however, the author overrestimates the role of television in the process of learning, and weakening the importance of reading books in our daily life. In actuality, instead of having recourse to other kinds of tools, mordernists are giving increasing prominence to the essentiality of books in the process of learning.
Admittedly, the mordern era has been marked with tremendous influences of the television. It is undeniable that the television has created a totally new ground for people to acquire knowledge. After all, the colorful pictures on the TV set treats to us with not only the vivid pictures of the events but also the various auditory effects, which can inspire people's interests in studying. By means of watching television, most people can concertrate in the magic tool for a longer time, compared to the means of reading a book with dead pictures and no sound. No matter how skilled, the writer could not depict the holistic atmosphere in the arena when R. Baggio failed to goal the final penalty during the World Cup Final. Still, applying television to the education is another example which can illustrate the merits of television. Thus, by virtue of the great invention, the public posses a effective and efficient means to gain the information globally, which cannot be achieved by books.
While conceding the advantages and prevailing trends of television, books still have their unreplaceable and inherent role over television in promoting learning. As for the television, the popular tool cannot satisfy humanities' insatiable appetites for acquiring knowledge, exploring the unknown and thus solving the pressing and immediate social problems. When these needs emerge, humanities are more likely to resort to the formal manner, reading books. Reading can settle individuals into a serene environment, which inspires their critical and logical thinking and questioning. Besides, the books at hand allow us to review what we read before, thus we can get a better perception of the points through digestion. For instance, seldom can we get acquainted with the proof of the Pythagorean Theorem by watching television. And the knowledges appeared in books are more systematical and conprehensive, while the television can only throw pieces of imcomplete information into our sight rather than our head, leaving no chance to review and digest the detailed information. After all, the main and original purpose of television is to provide information and to pull human beings to the entertainment. Thus the meditation, rumination by heart may be not enceavored through television.
As for importance of reading books, it has not decrease by no means but rather enhanced. Since more styles of books emerge in our daily life, such as books with melodious music, books mainly consisted of beautiful pictures, and books serving as a particular gift, with meaningful, profound and moving adages in it. Nowadays, to escape from the rapid and non-stop pace of life, and pressures derived from fierce competition, mordern people incline to resort to diverse kinds of books, viewing them as a sanctuary, in which individuals' soles could be consoled, and the wounds could be healed. From the powerful trends of this, we could realize that the exclusive importance of books is only enhanced rather than being weakened. The worry that the traditional roles of books in acquiring knowledge would be gradually fading out is unnecessary and unsounded.
Blessing or curse, our life styles have a strong correlation with the great invention of 20th centuries. Each and everyday, televisions provide us the up-to-date and vivid information.Yet on balance, as it stands, various kinds of mordern books, which has also being developed and perfected lending supports from the rapidly- developing technology, have drawn more and more attention from the mordernists, thus the importance of books can only be highlighted rather than decreased. And books still serve as a better tool for learing because of its profundity and broadness than television. |
