TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
WORDS: 551 TIME: 上午 12:50:00 DATE: 2006-7-6
The author asserts that the value of the study of history only exist to the extent that it is relevant to our humanities' daily lives. It is commonly acknowledged that the study of history do contribute a lot to our everyday lives, yet the author unnecessarily limit the role of studying history to extremely small range, and the reality is obviously not the case.
Admittedly, the study of history has its irreplaceable and crucial value in view of benefiting our daily lives. After all, this direct and strong link with our daily lives makes us be aware of the repeating mistakes throughout the history, in order to achieve our goals more effectively and efficiently through avoiding them. Our history is replete with these events serving as typical lessons from which we learn. The demolishment brought by the Second World War, though years go by, still cannot heals completely, either in the older generation's hearts, or in the nationality emotions. The study of the destruction made be our human race warn us the latter generations to cherish the peace era. Also, the disaster derived from the tyranny, for instance, the great wound brought by the Nazism governing, makes us treasure the democracy, and endeavor to perfect our modern society toward the ultimate freedom and democract. Still, Jewish holocaust, in which nearly six million Jew were disastrously killed. This stratling number in the history alarm the threat and potential danger of racial discrimination. Thus, the thorough study of the past allows us the opportunity for learning from the great mistakes hindering the proceeding of our human race throughout the recorded history.
However, the value of studying history is not only limited to the direct influences to our daily lives. In the field of academic research, not only can history provide valuable data, but every new theory comes into being by means of questioning, perfecting, using for reference, and developing the given theories established in the recorded history. For instance, in the field of physics, Newton overturned Aristotle' viewpoint, then his theory was also questioned by Einstein decades later. Yet all the essence in the three brilliant scientists' theories combined together to promote the development of the society. Another apt illustration is the exploration of the unknown land on earth, from the era of Marco Polo to that of Columbus. Nearly all the experience and theories in a particular era in the history were based on the ones practiced and established by the precidents before. This evolutionary path for exploring the unknown will undoubtedly continue to extend, providing precious history records regarding relevant data, pending assumptions, as well as significant theories. Hence, though these respects, especially in the field of academy, are not directly associated with individuals' daily lives, they do enable human beings to find more effective as well as efficient ways for solving the potential problems in the long run, and fulfill the humanities' insatiable appetite for the unknown.
In conclusion, the values of history study lies not only in the field relevant to people's daily lives, but in the domains which can explore and perfect the objective surroundings. Not only ourselves but our latter generations would benefit from the marvelous achievements in the field of science, by virtue of the prolific values that studying history can proffer to the academic researches.
