TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 522         TIME: 1:22:47          DATE: 2006-7-11

What is known to us all, artists create the art for people, while the critics help people understand the art, both of them are seemingly indispensable to people's life. Nevertheless, when it comes to the critical question, which one gives the society something of lasting value, artists or critics, it is really difficult to tell. As far as I concerned, the artists are the basic foundation for the lasting value, while the critics are the necessary supplement to the artists.

On the one hand, the artists' works provide people wonderful spiritual feasts and inspire people for a very long time, which is one of most typical characters of lasting value. Consider, for example, the writer Hemingway. His "The old man and sea", a representative work of his masterpieces, not only portrays a lively scene of a fishing village and the life of their residents, but also greatly inspire people to be perseverance and brave by depicting such a figure of an old man who fights against the sea, sharks, and even himself for tens of days but never give up to the nature. As a result, his works are so widely welcomed that impress and affect so many people, or even several generations. More than the literature works, music, sculpture and the like also have such functions, all of which help to formulate the lasting values.

On the other hand, the artists' works can also reveal some aspects of society which people may do not realize before and help people understand the society more thoroughly, which is another one of most typical characters of lasting value. To this point, Mark Twain’s works serve an apt example to illustrate this point. His insightful works revealed various things including the hard life of lower-class people, the endeavor of explorers, the curiosity of children, and the darkness of people in charge. Therefore, people could learned lots of previously unknown facts from his works, and hence understand the society more comprehensively.

However, I have to point out that, the critics who judge and comment on arts are the indispensable part that people should never neglect. The critic plays an important role in correctly and comprehensively conveying the information of arts to ordinary people, what is more important, helping people comprehend the arts more profoundly. For supporting examples, one only needs to check Monet's famous painting "Impression: Sunrise". Were there no critics comment on this work, it would be doomed to remain unknown to public due to its obscurity. Besides, great painter Van Gogh's paintings did not gain the acceptance of public until his suicide. It is the critics' contribution after nearly half a century to bring them back to life. From this aspect, the connection role between people and artists critics play in formulating lasting values is too important to be neglected.

On balance, when conceding that the critics do provide indispensable role in connecting ordinary people and the artists, we must realize that the lasting value largely depends on the creator- the artists – without whom, critics’ work will be meaningless undoubtedly. In short, it is the combined efforts of both the artists and critics that giving the society of lasting value which we ordinary people can cherish today.

这篇写的真的蛮好的, 羡慕中, 例子组织的都不错,多加点短句子会比较好,读起来有点累

What is known to us all, artists create the art for people, while the critics help people understand the art. Both of them are seemingly indispensable to people's life.

Their works are full of lasting merits and could stimulate people to a considerable extent for a very long time. Consider, for example, the writer Hemingway. His "The old man and sea", not only portrays a lively scene of life in a seaside village, but also depicts an old man who fights against the nature and never give up, which greatly inspire people to be perseverance and fearless. On the whole, his works are so widely welcomed that impress and affect so many people, or even several generations. Besides, more than the literature works, music, sculpture and the like also share the same features, all of which are created by artists along the history and contribute to formulate the lasting values.

On the other hand, the artist’s works can also reveal some underlying aspects of society to people, and therefore, enable people to understand our society more thoroughly. To this point, Mark Twain’s works serve an apt example to illustrate this point. Twain’s novels afford us a sense of how nineteenth-century Missouri would have appeared through the eyes of 10-year old boys. Also, Melville’ “Billy Budd” gives the reader certain insights into what travel on the high seas might have been like in earlier centuries, through the eyes of a crewman. Therefore, people could learned lots of previously unknown facts from his works, and hence understand the society more comprehensively.

However, I have to point out that, the critics who judge and comment on arts are the indispensable part that people should never neglect. The critic is vital to both artists and ordinary people. They can help people correctly and comprehensively understand the information of arts; they can assist artists clearly illustrate their beliefs; they also can serve as a guide to direct artists’ way to success. For supporting examples, one only needs to check Monet's famous painting "Impression: Sunrise". Were there no critics comment on this work, it would be doomed to remain unknown to public due to its obscurity. Again, great painter Van Gogh's paintings did not gain the acceptance of public until his suicide. Needless to say, it is the critics' contribution after nearly half a century to bring them back to life.
