TOPIC: ISSUE25 - "Anyone can make things bigger and more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in the opposite direction-in other words, to make things as simple as possible."
WORDS: 700 TIME: 上午 00:57:00 DATE: 2006-7-12
Our modern era has been marked with tremendous achievements due to the technology, which involves in the complex knowledge system and sophisticated logical and critical thinking. Undoubtedly, these marvelous necessary respects in obtaining the attainments require great efforts and courage. Yet, at the same time, we should not overlook the other side of the issue, that even more efforts as well as the great courage are required in order to simplify the things in our daily life.
To begin with, not everyone could make things bigger or more complicated, to some positive extent. That is, complication does indeed require great efforts and courage. Think that, as for obtaining the knowledge, our brilliant scientists do their endeavor to exploring the unknown, not only for satisfying humanities' insatiable appetite, more importantly, also for addressing the immediate and pressing social problems. Exploring the unknown is a long and persisting process, which needs talents, high abilities both in questioning and in deducing, skills in doing research, and the most importantly, the personal qualities, such as persistence, spirit of cooperation, etc. It is also comprehensible that a certain research may have some vague result, which arise lots of debating during the time. In this case, our scientists must own great courage to stick to their original ideas, ignoring the outside jeer and criticism. If not, the great plan is destined to facing the ultimate failure. This could be best explained from the examples that Copernicus, who stuck to his belief that Sun is the center in the universe, which all the other stars orbits around it. And Bruno, who was in favor of Copernicus's assertion, in face of the threat and great pressure of the authority at that time, at last contributed his life to the truth.
However, being swerved to the opposite direction of the issue, we would find that even greater courage as well as more efforts would be required in simplifying the things in our daily life. Our recorded history is replete with such apt illustrations. The brilliances of our talented scientists lies in that, not only do they explain the complicated world around us, also, they condense and exact these essence of the knowledge obtained, in order to make machines which is available and easily-mastered to our ordinary individuals. As for the development of computer, the size of it decreased, the usage of it also becomes easier, either for a teenager or for a senior. Also, take a look at our political organizations, which have being made the policies more common for every residents within the region to comprehend. Again, as for buffing on our job hunters' resume, singling out one or two typical respects of a certain person could make the resume more attractive among to the piles of the resumes, compared to describing oneself as an all-round person, which is rare in our real lives.
Not only the material things in our everyday life become simpler, due to the great efforts and courage, also, in terms of psychological state, we modern folks intend to look for simplify with their pluck to face the outside pressure of being spurned by the social group. After all, our modern individuals are so indulged in the complexity that the aspiration for simplicity is often being rejected by the self-assertion ones, who consist of a considerably large portion of the overall group of the residents. When the author of Walden (Life in Woods), Henry David, publicized his book regarding the past decade simple lifestyle in a wooden hut by the dream lake, the public all astonished, yet then tended to gravitate toward the ideal life fashion. However, in actuality, what makes the Walden Lake so attractive and utopian, is not the lake in itself, rather, is the author’s great courage of doing the opposite to the common style, sticking to the heart’s desire.
Simply put, not only the complication requires great courage and persistent efforts, the process of simplifying things, from the natural science development, establishing a policy in the field of politics, dealing with the trivial yet necessary things of a certain individual, to choosing a lifestyle and attitude, also requires equally, or even more valuable qualities of hard working and great courage. |
