What attitude should we take to the nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits? The speaker claims that they play a vital role in our social life. As far as I am concerned, while emphasize that they are necessary and significant, it is also reasonable for us not to overstate their importance or ignore their negative effect.
As we all know, such nonmainstream areas have their origin from the antiquity. At that time, the life of our ancestor was limited by their knowledge and the(去掉the) technology. Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry were the need of their minds under the certain kind of situation. Our progenitors would be certainly confused by the mysterious phenomena occurring around them such as why the sun could rise in the east while fell in the west, why the moon could wax and wane in a certain period, or why on the earth( on earth究竟,到底)the water flows and ebbs at a time interval., and such feelings then resulted in worry and anxiety. By vital of the role played by astrology or other kind of the nonmainstream areas of inquiry, they could to some extent be sure of their lives, with the sense of stability and predictability.(例子后的论述好呀) Next time, when seeing the meteor in the sky, the feeling of only being puzzled(only being puzzled 可改为puzzling) would be replaced by saying that there was someone who was going to the heaven.
In our contemporary society, such nonmainstream areas of inquiry also play an important role. Admittedly, the developing of the technology and accumulating of the knowledge in every field has made us wiser and more sagacious than our ancestors. We can use them to help (去掉help)solve many problems in our lives. But nowadays there are other new problems we should confront with. Most of us may have the feeling that we are now in an era filled with challenge and variation, and a large amount of people are under much press in their lives. So(最好改为And,没因果) how can we relieve ourselves in a society of fast pace? The nonmainstream areas of inquiry can help us own a space of mind without intervened by the outside. After a day of busy work, taking out some books of astrology and a stack of tarot cards to do some future-telling as an entertainment can be a useful way to let us find a moment of quiet. Thus the role of the nonmainstream areas of inquiry can serve as a spiritual placebo to satisfy the psychological needs of human.(这段紧扣主题,但在表述的开始部分讲的不够具体和简洁,可否直接指出那些主流科学给人带来的心理压力正是非主流所能缓解的呢)
When talking about the positive role that played by the nonmainstream areas of inquiry, we should not ignore the negative one(impacts), as everything can be regarded as a two-edged sword. Relying on them can make people do not make endeavor in their lives and may bring more severe aftermath to the society.(这句感觉表达很怪, 是否可换成更清晰一点的句子) Some of us may still remember several years ago, before the nine planets in our solar system and the sun would form the shape of a “giant cross” in the space. Someone predicted by using the astrology that the day when the phenomenon appeared in the sky, the earth would not exist any longer. But actually, as suggested by the astronomers, it was only a natural phenomenon. Unfortunately, we could see in our news reports, several persons did suicide on the eve of that day and there was some kind of chaos in some part of the world.(这个例子我深有体会呀!呵呵,可它不能很好的支持支持这段的分论点Relying那句)
In sum, such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits are the necessary part of our society as they can play a complementary role to the mainstream science. But in order to make the essential purpose of both science and the nonmainstream areas to be realized, we should not put them to extreme as the vital.
开头结尾很简洁有力, 但正文部分还要精练一些呀. 加油!
