TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS: 666 TIME: 51:57 DATE: 2006-8-6
In a civilized society, the most important factor that can both regulate and control its citizens and groups and even the society itself should be nothing but the law. It is our responsibility to obey all the laws. Resisting laws is not a rational action of any citizens.( Pewcg8的开头总是很简明,值得学习)
The body of law consists of rules and regulations concerning both civil and individual rights as well as social relations. Throughout history, the law has evolved, from a tool for the ruling class to dominate those lower classes, into a mechanism to regulate human-behavior and social development. This trend will continue to take place, as we make our efforts to build a civilization will peace and prosperity. It is significant for us to obey all the laws to help the law system go ground smoothly and it will definitely and eventually do good to us. If people only choose some to obey, or even care nothing about laws, our system of justice and the society as a whole will get into a dilemma. Consider the criminal law, which deals with crimes.(Consider what? 还是加上通些吧,as an example) It is accepted by all countries around the world that killing people will be punished no matter what the motivation of the criminal is or whether this criminal is intentional.(这句话说得欠妥吧,比如如果是正当防卫呢?建议不太了解的时候用一些表揣测意想的词) If some people hold the opinion that unintentional killing or taking one's life when you thought he or she should be punished need not be punished, and refused to obey the law, the society would be replete with chaos. Obviously, it will do harm to both citizens and the society. It is vital to let laws to safeguard the fairness of our society.
However, I have to concede that there are hardly any appropriate criterions to judge whether a law is fair or not, in other words, it is hardly to evaluate whether laws we obey are just or unjust. As people with respective social status, personal beliefs and political convictions are probably to take different position in juristic acts, their judgment on whether a law is a just one or not will surely differ. Moreover, it is possible if an adverse judgment is pronounced on some people, they are more likely to consider this law as an unjust one. A case in the business world serves to illustrate this point well. Small business groups are protected against those large corporations in almost every law system, for the sake of keeping balance in business affairs. It is clear that those large and transnational firms would think that this very law is unjust while other small groups and some politicians consider it as a just one. Due to distinct positions they stand, people can hardly find a criterion to devide laws into two part. In fact, since laws control citizens' behavior and govern social relationships, it is obvious that as our society are developing and moving dramatically fast, some laws will absolutely become unsuitable. Those unsuitable laws will show unjust and partial (patialness或prejudice)in certain cases.
But being unjust should not be the excuse for us to resist these laws. As I just mentioned, disobeying and resisting laws will result in nothing other than a chaos, which will do no good to the society and ourselves. In a civilized society, in which violence no longer exist(exists), it is unwise to react to unjust laws in an irrational way. The law system itself is constructed in a well-knit manner; the legislative, executive and judicial branches work together well. If there are really some laws that are no longer appropriate, what we should do is giving our advice to those legislative department as well as our suggestions, then the legislators will (would) take these into their considerations. Only in this way can we contribute to the project of building a more civilized and legal society.
In sum, it is every citizen's responsibility to make efforts to the development and prosperity of our society, and obeying all laws and giving advice on some inappropriate laws should be our incumbent duty.
总结:
