TOPIC: ARGUMENT76 - The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.

"A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin."

提纲:
1 样本可疑,志愿者不具有代表性。
2 研究过程有问题,没有排除mild soap的原因。
3 皮肤观感好不代表皮肤就好。
In the health and beauty magazine, the speaker concludes that Luxess face cream is effective in improving the condition of facial skin. To justify the conclusion the author cites a study which, however, has several flaws when careful examination is taken, rendering the assertion unconvincing.

First, the dubious sample makes the study unpersuasive. As a proper sample, the researchers should assure that the participants are representative overall customs. However, in the argument the speaker only mentions that a group of volunteers took part in the study. So it is quite possible that most of these volunteers' facial skin is originally in a good condition and even if they don't use any cosmetic beings their skin will also look nice. Or perhaps the volunteers are all teenagers and their skin is healthier than the adults.  Moreover the speaker does not give information to prove the sample is sufficient in size. Without any evidence shows the sample is proper the author cannot draw any reliable conclusion.

Secondly, the procedure of the survey is also problematic. Actually, in scientific research, the researchers should manage two groups between which there is only one different point namely ruling out any other possible factor, in this way the scientist can acquire the nature of some characters of the investigative object. But in this study the participants are permitted to use mild soap and Luxess both at the same which does not exclude the function of mild soap. Since the volunteers used two kinds of cosmetic, perhaps it is mild soap that make a marked improvement in the way people's skin looked and felt.  If so, the function of mild soap is replaced by that of Luxess which is a mistake.

Thirdly, the speaker has not provided direct evidence to illustrate that Luxess can improve the condition of facial skin. Although the author mentions the way their skin looked and felt has a marked improvement, which does not mean the condition of skin is truly nice. As we all know, naked eyes and intuitionistic feeling often deceive us. Sometimes the skin looks nice but if it is observed with more advancing equipment, many problems will be found. Participants' report may be reasonable yet as a response of a scientific study is much less convincing. Unless the speaker applies authoritative examinations of the condition of their skin, the improvement can not be taken seriously.

In sum, the conclusion is specious because of the dubious sample and imprecise procedure of the cited study. To bolster it, the speaker first should find a reliable sample which can represent all customs. To better assess it, the precise method of the study should be improved in other word, other possibilities should be excluded and accurate examination should be took on the participants. In this way the speaker can acquire a more persuasive conclusion.
