TOPIC: ARGUMENT127 - The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
"In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."

The author suggests that a software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers should be installed so that it could prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic and improve overall profits. However, the suggestion is problematic and unpersuasive, for a careful examination reveals several flaws in some aspects.
First, the author unconvincing claims that to identify and punish employees who use Internet to do personal activities during working hours will prevent them waste time. It is true that such solution will be likely to reduce employees to use Internet with company computers. Meanwhile, it is equally possible that they have to work on Internet to send E-mail and search information for work, whether such activities could be distinguished with private activites? or if not, to work in Internet will be punished, which is certainly unfair. Besides employees could completely waste time by chat and playing card without Internet and lower their productivity, as well, which is hardly prevent simply by software. Thus, the author's suggestion is uncertainly to be effective.
Moreover, to monitor employee is not necessary to foster a better work ethic. Even such activity is effective to make employee work without wasting time, the limitation and distrust toward them is more likely to decrease their passion and devoting to work, for it is common sense that no one like to devote to working for a person who doubt he/she. Besides, such distrust and strict atmosphere will make employees uncomfortable and unhappy in work, for the stress and no personal private time is drove employees trapped and no freedom. Therefore, a better work ethic is not valid to be fostered by such suggestion.
The last, the author is over simple to predict that the installing of software will improve overall profits. Even the software will make employee no longer waste time, and productivity is increased, the overall profit is not certainly to be improved, for the advancement of profile depends on the increasing of income with decreasing of the cost. For one hand, to install the software may cost a large amount of money, ascribing to the increasing of cost, for the other hand, no evidence indicates a high income. Hence, it is too hasty to predict the improvement of overall profits.
To sum up, the author makes the suggestion based on the invalid evidence and without comprehensive consideration with the possibility of the unexpected influence of such activity and the feeling of employees, thus if no further information of the price of software and company revenue and cost, and a consideration of the employees attitude, such conclusion will not convince me. |
