argument140 【米国有米~第四次作业】 TOPIC: ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University."During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."WORDS: 450 DATE: 2006-12-9The argument above presents a relatively sound case for arguing that the committee recommends that Professor Tomas should receive a $10,000 raise and promotion to Department Chairperson, without such a raise and promotion, they fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer assumes that Professor Thomas is well worth her annual salary of $50,000. However, careful scrutiny of this argument would reveal that it suffers from several fallacies and therefore is unconvincing.First of all, even if Professor Thomas is worth her annual salary of $50,000, no evidence is offered to support the assumption that she will leave without a raise of salary and a promotion. (刚开始就有even if 不太对吧)It is highly possible that as a professor of botany for 17 years, Professor Thomas has set up a well foundation for botany research at Elm City University. Thus, she possibly wants to spend most of her time in her study and have no interest to be a Chairperson. Perhaps $50,000 is enough for her, so she do not want a raise in annual salary. Unless it can be shown that Professor Thomas have some reasons to leave the university, the conclusion that she should be provided a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson is completely unwarrantedIn addition, no evidence shows the casual relationship between the size of Professor Thomas's class and her popularity. A multitude of facts, such as lacking of teachers, short of classrooms, could bring to the result that Professor Thomas's classes are among the largest at the university. Without ruling out these and other possible factors, the arguer could not draw any firm conclusion. (这段也太短了吧, 剖析不到位啊,没时间了? E.g.她的课程被设为必修课,学生们不得不参加)Finally, it is assumed without justification that background conditions have remained the same during different periods. However, the arguer obviously neglected that evidence of two years ago has little worthiness for future. Although the money that Professor Thomas brought has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years, no evidence is provided to support that she will gain a mount of money which is more than her salary for the future. It is possible that many factors such as financial conditions of the government and the value of items have changed over this time span. Any of these, if true, would undermine the claim that Professor Thomas is well worth annual salary of $50,000. (感觉这段本墨倒置,想驳斥无证据证明她是值50000年薪的,两年前的事实不足以推断现在和将来用来支持此论点的一个方面,还可以多列出几点原因以驳斥论点, 同其他教授相比呢? )In sum, this argument has several patent flaws which make it unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen the argument, further investigation and analysis are needed. Furthermore, to better evaluate the arguer's claim we would need more information about why Professor Thomas is worth an annual salary of $50,000 and why the committee considers that Professor Thomas will leave.
