TOPIC: ARGUMENT56 - Collectors prize the ancient life-size clay statues of human figures made on Kali Island but have long wondered how the Kalinese artists were able to depict bodies with such realistic precision. Since archeologists have recently discovered molds of human heads and hands on Kali, we can now conclude that the ancient Kalinese artists used molds of actual bodies, not sculpting tools and techniques, to create these statues. This discovery explains why Kalinese miniature statues were abstract and entirely different in style: molds could only be used for life-size sculptures. It also explains why few ancient Kalinese sculpting tools have been found. In light of this development, collectors should expect the life-size sculptures to decrease in value and the miniatures to increase in value.

By citing the recent discovery of molds of human heads and hands on Kali, the arguer concludes that the ancient life-size statues of human figures are created by molds and therefore predicts the decrease of big sculptures in value. Well-organized as the argument is, however, the argument is short of compelling evidence and thus inconvincible, along with its problematic conclusion.

The usages of such uncovered molds are suspicious. The argument mentions that the statues are made by molds rather than tools and techniques. But it does not consider other possible alternative usages of the molds. It is entirely possible that the molds are no more than some religious faculties for Kalinese in that period, or they are even not molds but certain weapons or tools apparently like the figures of molds. After all, the time is so far from nowadays and thus the customs and habits of ancient Kalinese are not available to us. Therefore, until the arguer rules out other possible usages of the molds, the conclusion that the statues are made by molds seems lack of credibility.

Moreover, the arguer fails to explain the reason of the abstract and different statues and few found tools from uncovered molds. Firstly, there is no causal relationship between the abstractness of statues and such molds. Perhaps it is the mainstream of arts in that time, or the former skills and techniques are not advanced enough to build more vivid statues. Secondly, entirely different statues in style may be created by different artists with totally different aesthetic values and understanding. Thirdly, few ancient sculpting tools found now do not necessary mean no more would be found later with more advanced science and technology. Also, even if there are few tools which would be found later, it does not prove that there were few tools neither. In this sense, it is much too rushless to explain the current unknown discoveries by those molds.

Finally, the prediction of decrease of life-size sculptures in value and increase of the miniatures is also inconvincible. Are sculptures valueless to be collected and researched just because of big sizes? Whether a sculpture is value or not also depends on its history, materials, creation process and so on, besides its size. Thus, before further research and necessary scientific surveys are held, the prediction on the value of the sculptures is not justified.

In sum, the argument fails to consider other possible usages of the molds discovered recently, and is too rush to explain current discoveries. Until the arguer provides more evidences, the argument would be inconvincible.

The usages of such uncovered molds are suspicious. The argument mentions that the statues are made by molds rather than tools and techniques.这句感觉没道理,磨具和工具可以同时使用啊 But it does not consider other possible alternative usages of the molds. It is entirely possible that the molds are no more than some religious faculties for Kalinese in that period, or they are even not molds but certain weapons or tools apparently like the figures of molds. After all, the time is so far from nowadays and thus the customs and habits of ancient Kalinese are not availablesimilar to us. Therefore??, until the arguer rules out other possible usages of the molds, the conclusion that the statues are made by molds seems lack of credibility.
