People group to pursue interest beyond the individual capability but of considerable share if achieved by collaboration of many people. Leadership is the art to direct, coordinate and organize such collaboration so that maximum interest is realized with the limited resource. In my view, the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives is essential to effectively and efficiently direct, coordinate and organize the collaboration for several reasons.
Firstly, only leaders who are consistently committed to particular principles and objectives can be most trusted by the members under leadership. As people form groups or community in order to pursue common interest, they selected leaders who must has interest in line with the community interest as a whole. However, leaders as agents in a dominant position, they tend to deviate from the public interest without too much constraint. Thus, an effective leader must be highly trusted by the members leaded. On one hand, with consistent commitment to particular principles and objectives, the behavior of leaders is predictable. The predictability of leader’s behavior under various circumstances reduces the public sense of uncertainty and hence helps improve trust to the leader. One the other hand, the well recognized objectives commitment and observed consistent principles make the leaders’ behavior and working outgrowth examinable. With clear objectives commitment, there would be more objective and hence cogent approaches to assess the performance as leader. And a leader with consistently committed principles is more likely to be identified in malpractice or power abuse, with which as a pre-knowledge it, to some extent, prevent malpractice and appropriation itself. Therefore, the consistent commitment effectively builds the credit of leaders and help eliminate obstruct, misgiving, hesitance when leaders exercise power and perform obligation.
Nevertheless, a leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shits in popular opinion is not qualified as a leader representing the best common interest. Firstly, shifts in popular opinion sometimes reflect the shortsighted and emotional weakness of ordinary people. Researches in human behavior suggest that people sometimes are governed by the emotional impulse and become irrational. And people tend to observe other people's action and have similar reaction instead of self cognition, which is named as Herding Effect. To illustrate, while rumor about bank bankruptcy, people in panic rush to branches to withdraw all their money, which can actual turn a perfectly healthy bank into bankruptcy. Therefore people would prefer to have a farseeing leader on behalf of their best interest rather than their prevailing opinion. In addition, given the gained interest available for the community to share, the distribution may depend on the decision of leaders. However, the relative status and influence of the sub-groups within the community under leadership may vary wildly from time to time, causing the some corresponding popular opinions to fluctuate as well. To ensure the long term interest for the community, which requires just distribution and decisions independent of the prevalent opinion related to interest allocation, leaders should be detached and sometimes disregard to the popular opinion so as to represent the best interest of the community.
In sum, consistent commitment to particular principles and objectives is a strength, and to some extent necessity, to effective leader. And the opposite, a stand highly dependent on popular opinion is a weakness for leaders to accomplish recognized public interest. They combine to suggest that the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives is the most essential quality for accomplished leader. |
