NO.51 教育
"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."只有针对每个学生的需要和兴趣,教育才真正的有意义。
========================================================
提纲:反对观点
1.兴趣在学习中起到了很重要的作用
2.但是过于强调兴趣不能代来efficiency 分别从个人,学校,社会三个层次论述
The speaker asserts that education will not be truly effective unless it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of every student. While I concede students will be well served according to their own interests, undue emphasis on individual desire invites inefficiency in the society.
To begin with, I agree with the speaker insofar as individual interests and needs are crucial to personal education. Rote learning of facts, theories, and skills does not help students master what is related to the essentials of knowledge. However, a great interest acts as a catalyst, with which one converts grey facts into interesting stories, treats insipid reasoning of theories as a sailing for treasures in the knowledge sea, and equips himself with powerful skills to deal with unpredicted storms. In his story, no longer has he been the slave of knowledge, but the master of it. It is the interest that promotes him to make a single aim, a solitary goal--the treasures for knowledge.
However, too much emphasis on individual desires does not exert positive effects on education, whether at personal, campus, or social level. At personal level, the speaker's assertion that specific design based on personal needs and interests will be effective overlooks the purpose of education, which is to teach a student to survive in a society by developing his mind with basic values and moral standards and equipping him to fit for work. If a student, for instance, is allowed to make his choice only according to his interest, it is possible that he will only choose the courses he likes and ignores other courses, such as philosophy and social science, which are essential for him to fit for the society in the future. Such education only brings incompetence and inefficiency to the individual.
At school level, it is infeasible for educational system to make specific design for every student. There is no denying the fact that schools provide limited educational resources for numerous students, whose number is being rapidly magnified by the whirling wheel of civilization. So heavy the price will be that we cannot afford it for an unpromising attempt. What we can do is not to tailor uniform perfect for every student, but to do the utmost to provide as many as alternative sizes to fit for the body shape of everyone.
Last, at social level, hardly does a society become more effective if the goal of such education comes into reality. Modern society, the development of which is increasingly depending on the complicated interdisciplinary technologies can never tolerate its overall citizens with narrow mind, short sight, and limited knowledge. Moreover, such system might tend to produce a large number of men with abundant knowledge but no morals, which is the most dangerous to society. It is hard to imagine what the society would be like when doctors have no professional morals, teachers themselves do not understand basic values of democracy, and executives are blind to fairness and equity.
In sum, it is not an efficient way for educational system to design for every student based on their interests and needs, no matter what an important part interests play in knowledge learning.
