WORDS: 592 TIME: 0:52:26 DATE: 2007-2-9
On the ground that the way people look, dress, and act is the result of their thought and the reflection of other's opinion, it is reasonable to say that much about a society’s ideas and values can be revealed by observing the appearance and behavior. However, people's appearance and behavior must more or less be affected by some deep cultural factors. Hence, insight to a society's ideas and values required scrutiny analysis through historical, geographic, demographic consideration.
To begin with, by observing and comparing the behavioral and appearance difference of groups of people within one society, one can tell much about a society's values about diversity, tolerance of newly evolved object, and the preservation of their own cultural heritance. In the evolvement of any society, there must groups of people have different aptitudes and judgment about their situation. Some may be conservative while some would be urge for changes. For example, in the Chinese history, there was an incidence about a kind devoted to change the dressing style in his country. By adapting the dress design of his enemy and abandon his own, the kind aimed to improve the fighting capability in his army. However, most powerful people at that time opposed sharply. From this incidence, people may recognize that at that time the society ruled by that kind is such a society regard dress was an important factor underpinned its cultural tradition. And the supporter of the king may suggest that it was accepted by many people that their country was in danger so that radical revolutions in many aspects are needed. The way historian studies the society ideas and values in the past society according to indirect material sheds light on how people recognize ideas and values in the current society by direct observation.
Moreover, by observing the appearance and behavior of people in one society and comparing them across other societies, one may revealing the prevailing ideas and values of one society. Even in the times of poor transportation and communication technology, cultural exchange between societies never stopped. Hence, during the exchange, people's appearance and behavior are influenced by each others. By identifying these mutual influences, one may get to know the prevalent ideas and values of a society. For example, in the 1960s, the dressing style in China is rather monochromic. Most people dressed themselves largely following the social custom. Young girl would wear red trousers with no pattern while elder people almost wear dark blue or black clothes with single cutting only, while people living in other countries dressed themselves in various colors and designs. Beside economic difference, one should recognize that at that time of China, conformity is overwhelming social norm while individuality is unjustly critiqued.
Nonetheless, the observation of appearance and behavior contains limited information about the society' ideas and values. The same behavior may result from many different reasons. For example, people in a society eager to trade with other countries may attribute to the belief of governors that trade surplus is critical to a nation's prosperity, or it may be the result of improved sailing technology that reduces trading risk in transportation and hence increase the trading profitability. Other factors like historical and political ones are needed to be considered for a convincing and complete picture of a society.
In sum, according to the observation to appearance and behavior of its people, much can be tell about a society's ideas and values. But more important, such obserations are needed to incorporate with complete and insightful analysis for a better understanding of a society. |
