TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 465 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-2-28
I agree that not the contemporary people but the people in the later times can have the right to decide whether an idea or effect of individual is great or not, as the speaker asserts. Nevertheless, in my view, we must take into consideration the fact that the application for immediate use and the solution for contemporary problems can be judged by people in the same time, in that it is obvious to give enough reasons.
The first reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that the great person is usually out of step with the time. Given that one is great and outstanding in some aspect, he or she should perceive or understand some things that are not acknowledged by the contemporaries, which is one of the basic reasons for us to think them to be great people of human. To support my opinion, there is a persuasive instance about Van Gogh who created the method of impressionism characterized by bold, rhythmic brush strokes and vivid colors and whose paintings cannot be sold except one when he was living. Yet, in present times the paintings of his are so famous that the majority of human could show lots of respects for him. Therefore, human tend to live under some illusion that they usually judge a person or an incident with his or her experience and, thus, impede the process of the abstruse contributions in the contemporary times due to the present circumstances.
Secondly, I agree with the assertion of the speaker insofar as the profound idea has no application in its times, lacking the proper environment, especially for the great endeavor of abstract science, such as mathematics. Though, the scientist had found the theory for some branch of knowledge, it is unrealistic to meet the appropriate problem to apply the theory for every scientist until certain discipline has developed to some stage in the science history. There are many examples to substantiate this point of mine, such as the matrix application in computational fluid dynamics and the research of quantum mechanics. Once it is no person including the founder of the theory who can anticipate the development of human knowledge in some hundred years.
On the other hand, there is one point in my opinion contended with the speaker. It is correct that there are many great persons in human history who are famous after their death. But, there are also a multitude of people living with us just in this world. Let me take for an example Stephen Hawking, who is known as the greatest scientist in the research of universe after Einstein. Hawking is still living in our world with great renown and contributions which are conducive for us to know much more clearly about the universe and the big bang. And, Hawking is only one of the prominent scientists, such as Euler, Gauss, Riemann, and so forth.
To sum up, unless the endeavor is not developed well or the abstract application is not available for human nowadays, I find the claim to be an unfair generalization that individuals who has made many contributions are not able to be known in our times; Otherwise, on balance the speaker is fundamental correct.
