TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appearedin a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout theUnited States.
"For many years all the stores in ourchain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domesticcheddar cheeses from Wisconsin.Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates anincreasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since ourcompany can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improveprofits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varietiesof imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

The argument concludes that in order toimprove profits of the chain of cheese stores, the best way is to stop stockingthe imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheeses. To support theconclusion, the author presents the evidence about the best-selling cheeses andthe survey by Cheeses of the World magazine. However, the assumption relied onthe best-selling and the survey is unconvincing in some critical aspects.

First of all, the author unfairly assumesthat the best-selling cheeses are important evidence to justify the assumptionthat the domestic are making more profits than the imported cheese.Unfortunately, the author does not provide no evident that the profits made bythe domestic cheeses are much more than the imported ones. Thus, it isunreasonable to discontinue stocking imported cheese which maybe the main salesof the profits of the chain.

Next point, lacking the information aboutthe subscribers’ size and makeup, the surveyupon which the argument are based can not representall the attitudes of the consumers. After all, the subscribersare a bit of all consumers for the chain of cheese stores. Therefore, theresults of the survey by Cheeses of the World magazine arenot persuasive and we cannot accept the conclusion with scant evidence aboutthe survey.

Thirdly, the argument fails to take intoaccount the possibility that if the chainstop stocking many varieties of imported cheese, the cheese chain will losesome consumers who are in favor of theimported cheese other than the domestic. And, the sales will be bound todecrease with the constant sales of the domestic cheese. Thus, it is absurd totake the measures to stop stocking the imported cheese.

Last but not least, in the argument thebest-selling cheese are only from the sale situation of the newest stores. Itis one-sided for all the chain's sales. If all the stores of the chaindiscontinue the imported cheese stock and cannot meet the needs of the market, then the profits are not able to be improved evidently, and the whole sale, asthe case may be, will decrease.

To sum up, the argument is indeed logicalunsound with the flawed assumption and theunjustifiable survey. To better assess it, I need to know : (1) what are themain kinds of the cheeses to make the profits in the chain of cheese stores;(2) what is the quantity of the sale of imported; (3) what is the makeup of thesubscriber and whether the survey can be informative for the chain.
