Is it the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value? I strongly would concur with the speaker when it comes to who is the main parameter of the art progress, although I would disagree when it comes to the influence of critic on art, as explained in the following discussion.
First of all, I agree with the statement insofar as it is what we appreciate as lasting value is the artistic work itself not the critique attributing to art. After all, the lasting value should be explained as something that makes a deep influence on our spirit, world view, society, politics, culture and civilization for a long time and leave itself in our memories. It is art not art’s evaluation that makes the great influence. An instance that illustrates this point is that in modern society people go to museum in order to appreciate the famous painting such as Mona Lisa rather than critiques. Thus, people may pay ultimately attention to not critique but artwork which is more likely to have the lasting worth.
Two major factors of artistic work's nature render the more value of art than critique--although there may be various reasons, the two parameters, in my view, are most important--originality and uniqueness. The artist's quirky imagination produces exclusive artwork. Moreover, the supreme masterpieces often are derived from unique inspiration and the most renowned artists are also mavericks. For examples, at the beginning, there are little people having enough insight to understand the abstract and profundity of Pablo Picasso's painting and the aesthetic feeling without accord with neo-classical principles of unity in Shakespeare's drama. Following the critique of these greatest artists’ time makes the society miss the best artworks albeit they are accepted by future generations. In fact, the uniqueness is just original from the originality. It is the two key points relating the lasting value that all critics lack. I cannot conjure up even a single example of any such unique critique owing to the critics' creativity.
However, the artists' creations are not uninfluenced by the critics. The critics can give constructive feedback for artists. Some people may consider that since true art is the product of the artist's authentic passion, a manifestation of the artist's unique creative impulse, and a creation of the artist's spirit, the artists will lose their inspirit as a result of being shaped by the so-called valuable advices. However, in several certain aspects, the artwork is a tool not only to express the thought of creator but only to amuse public, such as movie and so forth. These kinds of art must fit appetite of public. In this sense, this point is more important than the emotional presentation. The critics may stay on the side of public and give some feedback to help artist improve their work to entertain people. Roman Polanski, the director of a recent film-Oliver Twist which renovates an old movie collected a host of critiques about the old vision and harmonized these elements into his new movie. The new film attains a great success. Hence, the critics make indeed their effort to these artworks which may be something of lasting value through influence on artistic work itself.
In sum, the artist is the key power to make valuable creation. They, through works of art, provide an invaluable and unique mirror of the culture of the time during which the work was produced--a mirror for the artist's contemporaries and for future generations to gaze into for insight and appreciation of history. The art critic in a subordinate role, more often than not, does an indirect effect on society by obscuring this mirror.
