Do the arts, such as painting, music, literature and architecture, express the society’s otherwise ideas and impulses, as the speaker asserts? I agree insofar that all art works have a meaning that can be shared with others, but this is not to say that all art works reflect hidden ideas of a society.
As known to all, artists have the ability to use the skill and imagination to create aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences which are called the works of art. It is universal for people to arouse some feeling by art works, such as painting, music, literature, architecture and so on. In some occasions, one may feel that such feeling made by the arts is too subtle a thing for thought, however, art works must have a meaning instead of just offering us delightful colors, lines or sounds.
Turning first to public architecture and literature, some important works do reflect concerns for the
needs of society. During ancient and Renaissance times, the most important architecture, such as ancient pyramids and great cathedrals of Europe, was built to respect deities. Such constructions reveal people's belief and strong desire for their happiness in the afterlife. What is more, in literature, some writers are able to possess imaginations and thoughts representing the potential need and urgency of the contemporary society. For instance, fiction books depicting the utility of robots reflect people's desire for automatic industry, while books in advocating abolitionism or women status convey people's needs for social change. all the examples above illustrates that, in some occasions, art works can express the society's notions and impulses.
Turning next to paintings and music, it is true that these abstract art works express ideas and emotions that can also be conveyed in words. However, are these notions and feelings related for the sake of the society? To my view, some art works only express their authors’ personal feelings and notions about themselves or to evoke individual sentiment Consider a well-known painting, “Sweeping Woman”, created by Picasso, one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. The tortured figures in the painting translating the rawest human emotion into paint seems have no relationship to the society’s destiny, but to the author’s own experience and emotion.
To sum up, art works all communicating to people with a meaning are, sometimes, related to express the society’s ideas and impulses.
