TOPIC: ARGUMENT48 - The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.
"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."

The arguer concludes that fitness levels will improve when the economy increases. However, the arguer does not provide sufficient evidence that the recent decline in the economy is the main reason of not being adequate physical fitness, and thus this conclusion is unconvincing.
To begin with, the standards, defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness, are more likely to be changed in these twenty years. It is probably that today's standards become much more strict and comprehensive than ones of twenty years ago. Perhaps, in the past, the standards are not including psychological fitness, but only consider the physical fitness. And it is true that people suffer from more and more psychological weakness. If so, it is not reliable that the physical fitness level of Corpora decreases.
Even if only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit, it is a possible reason that people spending too much time using computers. The arguer supports the conclusion by evidence that the levels of computer ownership are highest in regions of Copora where overall fitness levels are highest. But, this evidence only offers the ownership but not displays how long these citizens use computers for. If citizens of this area, which is in both the highest levels of computers ownership and the highest levels of fitness, are the lowest levels of using computers, spending too much time in computers may be the reason.
Finally, although the expenditures on fitness-related products and services become low by this year, this does not mean that the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause and meanwhile, it is not the very reason of decline of physical fitness. Firstly, whether these fitness-related products and services can meet the need of citizens of Copora? How much relationship between such products and physical fitness is? If these products and services are limited in no matter function and price, people may not procure these. And without such products and services, people can also own a healthy body. Secondly, except the products and services, there are other factors which also can influence the physical fitness such as eating habits, working pressure and so forth. The low expenditures can not directly lead to the decline of physical fitness.
To sum up, the arguer's conclusion suffers from many falsities. To strengthen this conclusion the arguer should provide more evidences that whether to purchase fitness-related products and services is the determinant of physical fitness and reflects economic tendency.
