TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.

"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."

The author of the recommendation argues that directors of the Fancy Toy Company should replace Pat Salve by Rosa. To support his statement, he mentions that their profits had fallen when Pat Salvo was the president. In addition, Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry whose profits have increased dramatically over past several years. Finally the author mentioned though Rosa is twice expensive as Pat the expected profits will get over it. As far as I concerned, the company should not replace the president now for there are some fallacies in this argument.

In the first place, the Human Resources Manager makes an outright assumption without providing any evidence whatsoever to support that assumption. There were some surveys indicating that during the time when Pat was the president, the company's profits had fallen. However, the common sense tells us there may be countless reasons for falling profits. It is possible that the whole market during this time was bad and it was impossible for Pat to win. In addition, the recommendation does not cite the data before the time when Pat was president. Maybe the president before Pat spoiled the company and it was Pat that saved the company from falling greater.

Besides, that Rosa made increasing profits in Starlight Jewelry did not mean that he can succeed in Fancy Toy Company. We can notice that Rosa was the leader of a Jewelry company and the recommendation is for a toy company. The structure and customers of both companies may be quite different and the author fails to rule out the possibility that Rosa is not good at managing a toy company. Maybe Rosa is good at dealing the valuable commodities and not sensitive enough to the children market. Or perhaps Rosa will not be familiar to the structure of FTC in quite a long time during which the company may lost a great amount of market.

Moreover, the author fails to take account of the effect of extra salary which should be paid to Rosa. The recommendation only refers that Rosa's salary is twice as Pat's but do not cite how much it is and does not predict how much more profits the company will make. Thus it is quite possible that the salary of Rosa is so high that the company can not pay it without affecting the profit of the company. Or it is possible that since Rosa’s salary is too high that other managers want to raise their salary which can not be afford by the company.

In sum, the recommendation has so many flaws and it is too hasty to replace the president. In order to make the argument more believable, the author should mention more evidence showing that the falling profits are Pat's duty; Rosa will still be a good leader in Fancy Toy Company and how much the exact salary and expected profits is.
