TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

Whether the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests? According to the speaker's statement, the appearance of people is such a sensitive reflection that one can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of people. To my point of view, on one hand, I basically agree with the notion which emphasizes the effect of people's appearance in judging a society's ideas and values On the other hand, however, we should not magnify this significance and neglect some facts which are deep hidden that cannot be accurately embodied by the exterior looking of people.

When we take a look into the way that how people dress in some societies, we are informed more or less with the attitudes and thoughts of people; and further we speculate ideas and values of the societies. Everyone chooses clothes and makeup according to his favor and others’ appraisal. As we can see, nowadays in some metropolises which are full of fashion around the world, people are trying to wear the most up-to-date dresses. Since every season has its own faddish style, people who wear outmoded clothes are regarded as strange persons or are in a low social class. The public pays much attention to some dressing details like does a female movie star wear bag of LV or which brand of watch does the man wear? All these appearances and behaviors reflect the value of the society that is pursuing for a high consumption life standard.

Moreover, when taking a look into the way that how people act, we may also tell about a society's ideas. This can be proved by comparing how youngsters from eastern and western enjoy their respective leisure time after work. Western people prefer to join a party to meet new friends while easterners choose to have dinner or chat with their family members or familiar friends. Eastern people are known to be conservative while westerns are more extroverted.  Ideas of the societies in these two areas are respectively similar to this situation. Societies in west are more creative while in east are more conservative.

However, under some circumstances, the appearance and behavior of people in a society doesn't directly reflect its basic ideas and values. Sometimes the exterior are even misleading. Before making any judgment, we should take close scrutiny to the history, religious and culture of that society. Take the Muslim women as example, who wear veils which cover their bodies from head to feet, leave only their eyes uncovered. Although the appearance of them indicates their religious belief, the deep reasons for such dressing is unfamiliar to most of people outside the Islam world, most of whom consider the dressing as an indicator of equality for women. It is reported that the French national assembly once voted overwhelmingly in favor of a ban on Islamic veils in state schools, despite warnings from religious leaders that the law would persecute Muslims; and that resulted in protest from Muslims in France. Such occurrence derived from misconceiving of people's appearance and from lacking of investigation on a society's religious and culture.

To sum up, in many societies, the effectiveness of people's appearance in revealing a society's basic ideas and values is feasible. However, some interior values of the society cannot be simply reflected by the way it's people dress or act. It requires us to make close scrutiny on history, religious, and culture of the society.
