Agree or disagree: High schools, colleges and universities should spend less time teaching about general subjects and spend more time teaching about preparing for future career and jobs. (2007.8.25)

Nowadays, rapid development of society has profoundly impacted every aspect of human life. General subjects, however, provided by schools and universities are not able to make their students meet strict requirements of job market, even though some of them are indispensable and basic to human knowledge. As far as I am concerned, under this kind of new condition, more time of schools should be used to teach students about preparing for future career and jobs.

First and foremost, every individual in society should earn their lives when they become an adult. Getting a job, consequently, is their urgent goal after graduate from school. On the other side, our jobs are becoming increasingly complicated because of advanced technology, combining with soaring global population, job market is getting highly competitive and steps into a definitely employer’s market in which employers have totally authorization to select the most excellent one from countless applicants. Just imagine that we were the president of a company, who will be hired by us, a student full of knowledge and experience of future career or another one full of knowledge of general subjects. If other conditions of them are similar, I think former is preferable. Therefore, those courses concerning about future career are quite necessary to students in schools.

Admittedly, it is universally acknowledged that some general subjects cannot be neglected, in that they are essential to human knowledge. Take mathematics for example, in our daily life, we have to calculate many things, such as the salary we earn monthly, the price of commodities we buy from supermarkets and the time for us to prepare a romantic date, etc. Thus, some kinds of general subjects are ubiquitous in our life. Whereas, the time left for schools are limited, we have only 24 hours in one day and three or four years in high school or university, students should acquire those knowledge which critical to them for their future career. Based on this, schools should spend less time on providing general courses for them.

Moreover, certain general subjects are undoubtedly useless to students’ future life. For instance, if one does not want to become a chemical scientist or pursue his or her job in the field of chemistry, the absence of knowledge of chemistry cannot influence his or her life anytime. He will never combine alkali with acid. So why don’t we transfer his time used to study chemistry into the time used to learn the knowledge useful to his future career?

In conclusion, even though general subjects are significant to students, under this great complex circumstance, schools should pay more attention and time to focus on their future career and jobs, they are responsible for it.

简单评价:这是一篇好文章!虽有一些小问题,但是瑕不掩瑜,值得学习!

Nowadays, rapid development of society has profoundly impacted every aspect of human life. General subjects, however, provided by schools and universities are not able to make their students meet strict requirements of job market, even though some of them are indispensable and basic to human knowledge. As far as I am concerned, under this kind of new condition, more time of schools(建议改为education,在美国,school就是指中小学,这样的话就和题目上的college, university不对应了) should be used to teach students about preparing for future career and jobs.

First and foremost, every individual in society should earn their lives when they become an adult. Getting a job, consequently, is their urgent goal after graduate from school. On the other side, our jobs are becoming increasingly complicated because of advanced technology, combining with soaring global population,(这个地方应该用句号,不然这个句子太长了,而且从意思上讲也该断开了) job market is getting highly competitive and steps into a definitely employer’s market in which employers have totally authorization to select the most excellent one from countless applicants. Just imagine that we were the president(前后人称不对应了,建议改成you are,不过从下文来看,我觉得最好还是淡化人称关系,最好用Just imagine a manager of a company。而且我感觉用president似乎也不是很合适,manager是不是更好呢?) of a company, who will be hired by us, a student full of knowledge and experience of future career or another one full of knowledge of general subjects.(这个地方应该是问号吧) If other conditions of them are similar, I think former is preferable. Therefore, those courses concerning about future career are quite necessary to students in schools.

So why don’t we transfer his time used to study chemistry into the time used to learn the knowledge useful to his future career?(这一段的主题没问题,不过我认为你对general subjects的把握有问题,chemistry不属于general subjects。通识课程主要包括的是历史与文明、逻辑学、数学、美学、general science等等,化学已经是很专业的一门学科了)

In conclusion, even though general subjects are significant to students, under this great complex circumstance, schools should pay more attention and time to focus on their future career and jobs, they are responsible for it.
