It is a problem when choosing which students should be awarded. Someone may think that hard working is  the most important character  while some others may  believe that achievement is the more important standard. In my opinion,compare with effort, achievement is more suitable to select who should be praised.

Firstly, in contrast with effort, it is achievement which is the objective standard to award students. As we know, it is difficult to evaluate how much effort that students contribute to study. Suppose that some students may be lazy but they say they exert themselves to study. How to verity what they have said? Or by votes whick is not fair enough. On the other hands, achievement like good grades can be easily seen publicly. And no one will suspect that there are some corruption among the evaluating process. In generally, no one can deny the objective of  achievement.

Moreover, achievement is the best proof that students work hard in proper way.One case is  if the students do not know anything about the subject, they are impossible to get good grades. Another case is  though  the students work hard but not in the right direction, they will also fail. It is  analogical to learn to swim. If freshmen do not know how to swim, they will choke no matter how hard they try to swim. On the other words,if people can swim fast and effortless, it is easily to say that they have already learned well how to swim. In short, achievement is very good criterion to judge whether students are hardworking in right way.

Last but not least, judging by achievement is a good lesson to teach students to adapt to norms of the society. It is publicly known  that the majority of most famous prize are given to ones who achieve greatly. For example, Nobel prize are granted to scientist who make great achivement, like Einstein  receiving the prize for his contribution to Physics. So the judging method will make students better adapt to the fact that  that it is achievement which is the more important principle to evalute the work than effort.

In summary, as a standard to evaluate the students's work ,achievement is more suitable. Because it is more objective, meanful and a good lesson.
