Agree or disagree with the following statement: it is more important to award students for effort (trying or hard working) than for achievement (good grades)2006 6 24

Which one is more important in judging a study’s quality, his efforts or his achievements? I prefer the later. My point is substantiated by bellowing reasons.

Supporters of hard working opinion always lie their reasoning on the ground that a debilitated student who tried his best to finish a Marathon game deserves applaud more than a talent athlete who won the race easily. However, the grim reality is things are not always as simple and apparent as above example. What if in a situation that one’s efforts cannot be seen or verified directly? Or let’s put it in this way, how can a teacher judge whether a student is industrious or not? There’s no way but by his/her achievements --- homework assignment and transcript. We cannot say this is exactly a unbiased method, but comparing the difficulties involved in tracking how much efforts one was devoted, sensible people knows to select a better way.

Another undeniable argument lies in the fact that distinguished students always have some pathways worth praise and follow. Suppose you are a teacher, you have two students, one stay up every night to review lessons in a unscientific way --- devoting great efforts, while the other take advantage of all resources to help facilitate his learning --- easily get good grades finally. Isn’t ridiculous to ignore one’s talent in learning but praising another’s stupid ineffective futility?

Furthermore, applaud of achievements is a good stimulus for other fellow students. It is commonsense that everyone wants to be elite. A full mark transcript does not mean everything, but it does stand for a lot, at least, a target to strive for. So, as long as one set a honored score as a goal, he/she will invest great effort.

In sum, it is better to say that one may devote a lot of hard work but failed, but one can never win without arduous struggle. Weighing the talent plus efforts they paid and positive influence they formed, those who achieved eminent scores do worth more compliments.
