17"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS :562 BY VICTOR883
Should we single people shoulder the responsibility not only to obey just laws, but also to say no to, even resist the unjust ones, as the speaker maintains? I disagree with it and the contention lies in that how the individual defines the laws and divides them into just ones or unjust ones. What’s more, it seems some extreme if the individual disobeys and resists the laws which be regarded unjust.
Admittedly, laws and regulations have become a critic part of people’s life in today’s competing life and should keep certain stability and consistency. If some laws are frequently changed according to the statements of small part of people, they will have less and less power in executing in the future and lose their executive forces in the end. Consider, the law of property, for example, if this law which aims at protecting the legal private property and interests of the individuals and companies can not keep in a fixed place, the people and private companies may worry about the security of their own possession and then become distracted in their works, and this instability surely affects the positive of their works and brings about the economic loss at the end, even damage the stability of the whole society.
Nonetheless, the speaker overlooks such a truth that laws can not be entirely equal in that some laws may benefit a certain group of people and at the same time affect the interests of other persons. So it is hard to define which laws are unjust and which ones are just. A striking example illustrated clearly is that some items in the law of environmental protecting may be different in the eyes of the entrepreneurs and the common citizens in the same city. In the perspective of the entrepreneurs, the law related to diminish pollution may seems unjust because it can bring about adverse effects to the interests of their companies ,but the citizens may consider the enforcement of that law as a just and inspiring thing which returns clear
circumstances to them. In short, laws are subjective in some sense which can be divided into different informs in different eyes.
In addition, laws can make some changes even some concession according to some special situations. Because the era is different and some new things emerge into our daily life, it is understandable that the laws need to be changed aptly in case that they will keep pace of the new era and tackle with some new problems effectively. But it is unwise for the individuals to resist the laws, which even be reckoned as unjust and obsolete .Conversely, they can search for some alternatives ,such as handing out the advices for reform of certain laws to legislator or government, appealing for new moderate laws, and so forth. If everyone who find the laws unjust to him disobey and resist those laws, the whole society will be trapped in chaos of complains and denouncements. And this situation is neither good for propelling the legal reform, nor for the stability of society.
To sum up, as a member of the whole society, we should first ensure the stability of the society which mainly maintained by sorts of stable laws, and at the same time we should modulate our laws in correct ways to the increasing changed environments and make them serve our society better. |
