"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."


Whether teachers should work outside the academic world is a hot issue nowadays. As is known to all, practical skills place an important role in our society. To better fulfill their duties, teachers need real world experience to cultivate students. Meanwhile, some basic knowledge should not be neglected.

First, knowledge gained from practice is more impressive. Common sense informs us that knowledge presented in books are often daunting, thus students’ interest can not be aroused and can not accept them easily. However, vivid practical experience endows us some original, useful ideas. With these conceptual frameworks in mind, students are more likely to master the essence of a subject. Take the mathematic science for example, theories in math are often hard to understand, but things may become much easier if we use them to solve some practical problems, such as making a transportation mathematic model. In these cases, teacher who usually work for business outside school may lead students to do such work, and make education more effective.

Second, the ultimate goal of education is to cultivate qualified workers for various field of work. It demands for ability to analyze factors and make judgment. Only focus on books, student may no nothing about how to apply what they learnt to real world work. After all, the pace of development of science and changes of society is so fast, that recent printed book could not include current events. However, teaches with practical experience can bring up to date information, and achieve a better position to adjust their courses to meet the demand of the society. Consider the teachers in my department. As teachers specialized in meteorology, they often engaged in the mission of our local meteorology station, and then lead students to analyze the movement of current synoptic system, and tell us reasons for the correction or the fault of the forecast of the certain station. In this way, students graduated from our department often amounts to best weather forecast tellers. Thanks to the experience from our teachers practical work.

Last, the significant of academic work should not be neglect. If teachers indulge in work out side university, it would not only bring no benefit to their teaching job, but also distract their energy a lot. We should be in mind, our time and energy is limited, it is impossible to do everything by ourselves. Academic works is the collection of countless people direct experience. If teachers can make good use of them, their knowledge scale can broader a lot. Only it they comprehend them well, they can make student understand clearly. As for student, having familiar with this knowledge would help them build a solid foundation for their future work, otherwise they may feel confused.

In sum, real world experience is necessary for a teacher to better orient instructions to students. Combining it with their academic work would help to achieve education final goal of cultivating useful people to our society.
