"It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data."
在没有数据之前就下结论是大忌。

As is known to us all, to illustrate one certain thing need some convincing evidences to support it. And statistics are always used as the basis statistics. Hence, some people assert that it is grave to theorize before one has data. In my point of view, however, I do not think the assertion is true in any case. There are always some exceptions exist.

Admittedly, it is necessary to base on reliable statistics before come to a conclusion. With accurate data, a verdict will become more convincing and persuasion. No matter in the area of physics, chemistry, biology statistics have great influence on it. Take I myself as the example, every time I go to the lab to have an experiment, one significant thing I must do first is that I must obtain the relatively accurate data, and then according to my data I draw the experiment conclusion. Newton can also be served as the example to illustrate the point. Before Newton put forward the Newton's Law, He used his own high mathematics capability to precisely prove his suppose, so his views cannot overthrough by others. Therefore, to support one's suppose, data is the best proofs.

Nevertheless, there are some especial cases exist. Some theories are actually begin with assumption, And then proved by some experience and other material evidences rather than statistics. The continental drift theory can be best illustration for the point. When Wenger stayed in bed, he focused his attention on the world map, to his surprise, he found the edge of the continents were so similar that it can almost match as a whole. So he proposed the continental drift theory without any data. Few years later, Wenger found some biological evidences to better prove his theory. And now this theory is apparently accept by people. Hence, the significance of data not always have influence on theory.

On the other hand, overemphasis the importance of data will hinder the advance of some theories. Since not all theories can be support by data at the very beginning. If we always hold the opinion that we must theorize after the data obtained, there is no chance for the research to continue. Therefore, no innovations will appear. Yet society is developing, it is necessary to assume at first and prove by the further evidence. Just as Hawking who has proposed the theory of the world's origin, which is not supported by data. Owing to it has surpassed the ability of our human beings at the present time. But there is possibility that it will be proved in future.

To sum up, not all the theories need data to support before it is theorized. The most perfect attitude is as the saying, "specific cases, specific analysis." That is to say, we should treat different condition with different manner.
