People might have different ideas concerning the function of movies, whether they are primarily for education or entertainment. This division in function is quite obvious in today’s movie industry, but as to me, I generally prefer those provoking movies which could make me think and benefit my knowledge and understanding of the world.

To begin with, it is true that there lies such a huge division of the function of movies. Many movies nowadays, especially those commercial movies which are produced with a giant budget, are primarily aimed at entertaining people. Because the first goal of these movies are to be profitable, to attract more audience certainly becomes the determinant factor in producing these movies. Under such circumstances, whether or not they are educational, provoking are not the major issues for the movie producers and directors. However some other movies, which according to my observation are mostly with much less budget, or even independent movies, are made primarily to present the directors’ sharp understanding of the world or to depict a certain social phenomenon. These movies, since are not made primarily to make profit, emphasize more on the intellectual quality the movie itself presents, thus are more likely to become provoking to their audiences.

However, as stated above, to me, I certainly prefer movies which are educational and provoking in thought. I always take the experience of watching movies as opportunities to learn about life and the world around us. Certainly, provoking movies could offer us many thoughts and understandings of the world that could benefit our mind. This benefit could be explained in several aspects. First of all, some provoking movies could help us to form a clearer picture of the world. Of course many documentary movies belong to this type. These documentary movies, whether focusing on a specific period in history, an important historical figure, a changing social phenomenon, could all help us to better understand the world we are living in. Secondly, some movies are aimed at revealing a distorted or less known history. For example there are several movies depicting the 911 event from a different perspective. We could argue whether these movies are made based on convincing facts but at least, they offer us some new perspectives to observe the issue. Thirdly, some movies could present us a life experience that we can never experience and help us to think about the complex issues about life, time, love, etc. Take this year’s academy award winner ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ for example. After experiencing in the movie the curious life that heads in the other direction, we simply cannot help thinking of what growth truly means. In all, since provoking movies could benefit me in all these ways, I would definitely prefer to watch them than those entertaining movies.

To conclude, the division of the function of movies is quite obvious nowadays that some movies are mostly for entertainment while some others are aimed at making people think. I would certainly prefer the latter type because these kind of movies could benefit my mind and understanding of the world in many different ways.
