Some movies are serious, designed to make the audience think. Other movies are designed primarily to amuse and entertain. Which type of movie do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your ansewer.(03/23/07)

Some who hold this idea that serious movies such as documentary movies and war movies are preferable to comedies claim that the former are more accessible to reality and inspire us to think about behaviors and value perspectives existing in the society. Although I concede that serious movies are superior to cozy movies in terms of mental guidance, I’m more pliable to humorous movies because of the fascinating imagination and exaggerated scenes.

Entertaining movies usually lift our spirit since they make the audience feel soothed and appeased in such a cozy and comfortable atomosphere. Take me for example, I get used to see comedies when I’m bothered or dejected. The plots are various mythical stories stemmed from edition of human history, fantasy of outspace and isolated island and fancy of mundane lifestyle. I believe the movie directors get the power to make boring trifling things so absorbing and interesting. Everytime I watch these comedies, I always easily drive myself away.

In addition, some human behaviors and emotions exaggerated in entertaining movies are typical reflections of modern society. In some extent, we could say that comedies conduct the public to think about their and nearby lifestyles. Xingchi Chou is one the most famous comedy actors in my country and his movies are worthy watching hundreds and thousands of times. People are impressed of the widespread words and considerable amount of insightful scenes in the films. For example, in our daily life, we’d like to call a bug “xiao qiang” which comes from one of his comedy.

On the other hand, it’s very important not to take this assertion too far, serious movies bring us broader knowledge of life. History documentary movies provoke us to be proud of our traditional culture and encourage us to innovate and strengthen our country also. War movies advocate us to cherish and maintain world peace instead of carnage and destroy caused by wars. Ethic movies teach us to conform to social rules such as being loyal to spouse and overcoming humane gluttony. All in all, serious movies take a function of education to the public.

In conclusion, despite the education function of serious movies, I’d prefer to entertaining movies. After all, we shape our personality mainly through traditional teaching in class and influence from surrounding people but not from watching movie. However, more people are inclined to choose watching comedy as an essential recreation to obtain amusement and laughter.
