Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for
a teacher try to help students to gain self-confidence than to teach them specific
knowledge. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer(03/10/07).

When it comes to which is the better goal for a teacher, self-confidence in students or specific knowledge, different people may have different answers. As far as I am concerned, self-confidence is more important than specific knowledge for students. The arguments go as follows.

Admittedly, specific knowledge is of importance, without some of them, we can not continue our learning. But the world is now changing so rapidly that the knowledge is renewing all the time. What is considered to be the true can turn out to be wrong soon. If teachers only imparted specific knowledge and did not help students to explore the unknown world, we might still live under the illusion that the earth was flat and all the stars orbited around the earth. In a word, the specific knowledge is not the goal of education. If we limited ourselves in the already known world and in the specific knowledge, the society we live in can not improve. So the goal of teachers is not the specific knowledge but to help students to gain self-confidence and the ability to explore the unknown.

Self-confidence is significant in a child's development, not only in education but also in his/her whole life. With self-confidence, a student can learn knowledge better, accomplish tasks more easily, communicate more freely, which all help him/her reach a better future. Without self-esteem, we may be so timid that can never express what we really believe in and wish to do,which, may hamper our advancement towards success and harm a person's personality development. As self-confidence is so important that every teacher should try their best to help students to gain self-confidence.

To sum up, though specific knowledge is important, I insist that self-confidence is more significant because it not only helps us in the way to gain knowledge but also has a profound impact on our whole life.

我觉得如果楼主在自信心那段写的更翔实一点就更好了，具体知识那段的篇幅大过自信心那段，有点头重脚轻，因为你支持的还是老师帮助建立自信心更重要~
