TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

   In this memo the president suggests that (1)the Green Mountain College(GMC) have more courses of business and job counselors, so it has more graduates get jobs;(2) the Mira Vista College(MVC) should learn GMC to open courses of business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors. Close scrutiny of each of the facts, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the recommendation.
  First, 90% of students of GMC have job offers last year do not necessarily indicate that it's the business courses and job counselors' work. For the survey did not show the exactly phenomenon, perhaps more offers come from other realms of subjects such as biology and math.And it will have nothing to do with the job counselorsor if the GMC has a traditional cooperation of the companies who hire its graduates, or it's just a phenomenon by accidence during the history of GMC. By the way, as inferred in the memo, do students of GMC find full-time jobs in their major field just as the MVC students. There is no evidence to support that GMC has job offers in the same quality as the MVC does.
Even if GMC really has a higher quality and quantity employment rate for their actions described in the memo, yet the assertion contains no evidence to support this assumption. For one thing the president doesn't mention the orientations of both two colleges.If the GMC is a business college while MVC has an advantage of science. There is no necessary for MVC to change the structure of their curriculum. And the president neglects the difference in the teachers and resources of education. They should not expect the same effect even they take the same tactic apparently,let lone the president suggests opening  the computer technology which is not involved in the GMC's courses.
  In sum, the recommendation relies on certain doubtful assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To bolster the recommendation the president must provide more evidence: survey about the employ rates in recent years and when the GMC take the courses and counselors,the hired graduates' major, in which way they get the offers, the exactly circs of the two colleges, and I would also need to know how can they ensure the quality of the new education.
