In this argument the author supposes that more courses in some specific fields and additional job counselors are necessary for Mira Vista College. To support his recommendation, the author compares the employment situation between Green Mountain College which has more business courses and counselors and Mira Vista College which doesn’t, indicating that the former equips its students with more advantages in hunting for jobs than the latter. At first glance, the argument might be somehow reasonable, but close scrutiny reveals that it contains several unconvincing assumptions and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.
First of all, the author’s conclusion about the job-hunting situation of the two colleges depends on the statistics of the percentage of the students who have found jobs while he overlooks the possibilities that last year’s statistics might be an aberration and that in most other years, Mire Vista College has more graduates getting offers from prospective employers. Or perhaps there are more graduates in Mira Vista College who wants to do further study rather than to find jobs. Even they informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment, they might change their decisions afterwards. Moreover, Green Mountain College might less graduates than Mira Vista College does, so the factual number of the students that have found jobs is equal between the two or. Without ruling out such alternative explanation for the disparity in job offers, the author cannot come to the conclusion that the employment situation is better in Green Mountain College.

Secondly, even assuming that there is a less satisfying situation of employment in Mira Vista College, the author unfairly assumes that the situation is due to the less capabilities and efficiency of its graduates to get offers by presenting the number of graduates who had found jobs within three months and who got offers in their majors. However, there might be more corporations near Green Mountain College, which provides convenience for graduates to hunt for jobs and it is more likely that the graduates from Mira Vista College are willing to spend much time in order to find a more suitable and satisfying job instead of spending little time only to find an ordinary one. Furthermore, maybe their major field of study is not so popular in hunting for jobs and thus gave it up, which doesn’t mean they are less able to find prospective jobs.

Thirdly, even I concede that the graduates in Mira Vista College are less competent in hunting for jobs, the argument fails to find proof to substantiate there is a causal relation between the facts that there are less business courses and job counselors and that the graduates are less capable in getting employment. The author ignores a host of other possible explanations such as a higher average academic performance of the students in Green Mountain College or higher quality teaching instruction or facilities. For that matter, the Mira Vista College cannot achieve the same effect as expected only by offering more business courses and job counselors.

Finally, the arguer assumes that offering more business and computer technology courses and job counselors is the only way to improve the graduates’ ability to find jobs. Yet, the author overlooks the possibilities that the graduates might not willing to find jobs in business or computer technology. It would be better to provide more general courses such as pre-employment training rather than those too specific lessons. Without thing about such alternatives, we cannot accept the arguer’s supposition is the best and most suitable one.

Summarily, the author’s recommendation is not well supported. To bolster it, the author must provide evidence that the graduates from Green Mountain College are indeed more successful and have more ability in getting offers. To better supports his recommendation, the author also has to illustrate clearly that the business courses and job counselors lead to the convenience in finding jobs and excludes other alternative measures Mira Vista College could take by comparing them with his recommendation.
