242.The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of
Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year was reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

最近的一次调查，尽管大多数学生表明他们不太可能作弊，但是这未必属实。因为，调查是由诚信委员会组织的，如果结果表明新的诚信制度效果不好，很有可能回复旧制度，因此，学生们有可能为了自己考试的利益而没有反映真实的情况。

通过以上两点表明新体制的优劣有待于进一步的验证。因此，对于其他大学和学院，就更没有必要去参照和采取类似的诚信制度。除此之外，此种诚信制度，有两种弊端：
①有学生检举作弊的方法容易使得学生间相互猜忌，破坏学生只有单纯的学和朋友关系，不利于学生的心理健康发展。这个制度类似中的文化大革命。
②学生们有可能为了作弊而不去相互检举，如果这样，那么新制度不但没有遏制作弊现象，反而使其愈演愈烈。

This editorial argues that a recent reduction in cheating of Groveton, which has proven effective, and other colleges and universities should adopt similar honor code. To support this argument the editorial’s author points out that cheating case has decreased from 30 in old-fashioned system to 21 in the first year of new honor code, then the figure fell to 14 in four years later. Also, a recent survey, in which most of students said that they would not likely to cheat in a large degree with honor code, indicates Groveton’s new honor code is far more successful. However, it is unilateral that Groveton’s new honor code is deserved to learn by other colleges and universities by means of decreased cheating cases and a survey with good result. It is thought that there several explanations for this.

First of all, there are thirty cheating cases in old-fashioned system in Groveton, and the number of cheating case was found by teacher. On the contrary, the figures for new honor code were derived from students. Although cheating case has an obvious decrease from the figures in new honor code, it does not mean that cheating case really did. Perhaps, some cheating cases, which account for a big portion, were not reported by students because of their own interests of exam. Additionally, the number of students in Groveton decreased in those years when the new honor code was executed. If in that case, decreased cheating case is quite normal. Hence, the figure given by author is just a data regardless of its cardinal number, which is not clear and scientific.

Furthermore, a recent survey, which illustrates that most of students would not likely to cheat in new honor code, can not reflect the truth. First, The investigation conducted by the Groveton honor council, which might recover old-fashioned system instead of new honor code if the result is not in line with their goal. It is possible that students did not tell the truth because they think they can cheat in exams as long as no one to disclose. Second, the survey just describes the situation of students in Groveton but all the students in the country.

Finally, we become aware of the obvious fact that new honor code should be checked further. Except that, new honor code has two extreme disadvantages. First, it easily has access to destroy their healthy attitude, particularly in the process of suspecting other, who might be cheating or not. Quite often, it is easy to make misunderstanding among students, which is not used for establishing harmony friendship. Maybe, it will be a small disaster like culture revolutionary in china. Second, students might not to disclose others in order to avoid being disclosed, undoubtedly, which does not control cheating case but propel it to the peak.

In conclusion, whether the new honor code reflects the truth is uncertain. To reflect the fact the author should provide accurate statistic data such as the percentage of cheating cases, make a further investigation and experiment about students’ attitude toward cheating in terms of no- monitoring with a disclose in the back and monitoring.
