TOPIC: ARGUMENT242 - The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

The author claims that College should adpote the suggestion that put the Groventon's honor code.since it can prevent the cheating among college, based on the evidence that the number of cheating declining after it was in place for a year. In addition, the author provides the survey that most students are willing not to cheat with an honor code in place.

Firstly, it is confused whether the the number of cheating really declining after it was in place for a year. The decreasing number of cheating students may illustrate that fewer cheating students caught in the exam. But there might exist that more students cheat but not report. Besides, the students may not will to report the cheating of others, since it will harm the friendships between them.

Furthermore, it is not sure how the GC influent the students and how many students are counted into this survey. In fact, whether the GC honor code is accpeted broadly depends on the quantities of its sample pool. The survey on GC honor code inluding little students may be useless and not trusted. In addition, the conditions of the sample pools are very important. The one year students may welcome the GC honor code council, while the third or fourth year students may object to it and they may not be willing to follow it.

What is more, the conclusion from the spefical survey should not generalize to other college although the survey is verified to be effective approach on the cheating cases. For instance, if the exams in other university are difficult to pass, these students may will to cheat, while the students in GC are willing to not cheat since the easier exam.

Therefore, the author supplies the sounded survey and evidence to prohibit student from cheating, whereas his deduction is not rational and his conclusion are doubtable.
