144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

2 Feminist artists

Those who don't think highly of critics are convinced that the artists give society something of lasting value through their artwork while the critics are no good. It is seemingly well-reasoned but actually fallacious when we get into speculating about the role of the critics in society.

It's can't be more reasonable to say that the artist contributes to something of lasting value for our society. First, the artist creates works of art which are indispensable for culture and humanity development of our society. In particular, the creations of the artist fulfill the aesthetic demand of the whole society, as indicated in the famous Maslow's theory. Say, they may provide a record of history and culture, or reflect ideology of the time, or bring something pleasant to watch or listen to. The artworks of the artist not only promote culture and humanity development but also influence the society in morality and politics. For instance, western feminist artist managed to make art that reflects women's lives and experiences to improve women's rights and impact on art throughout the 1970s.

On the other hand, the critic also creates lasting value to the society. Above all, the critic makes the artist reflect and refine on their works. Just as the Roman critic Quintus Horatius Flaccus put, the evaluation of a critic is like a grindstone and the creations of the artist a knife. The critic is not capable of cutting, but it sharpens the knife. Moreover, a good artist may be an excellent critic first if he wants to make contributions to society. Take, Bruce Lee, the famous martial artist as an example, his criticism that traditional martial arts techniques were too rigid and formalistic to be practical played an influence in the creation of the eclectic martial art Jeet Kune Do. In addition, the critic assists the society with digging out the outstanding artist originally unknown to public. Shakespeare, an ordinary screenwriter before his death, his work has been studied by the whole society ever since Goethe and Samuel Coleridge found that he is virtually a great writer.

To conclude, the artist and the critic are both conducive to bringing society something of lasting value. The artist can be a knife that used for cutting, while the critic is a grindstone which sharpens the knife. We can't ignore the value of the critic.

Those who don't think highly of critics are convinced that the artists give society something of lasting value through their artwork while the critics are no good. It is seemingly well-reasoned but actually fallacious(怎么是argu的调调? 这里可以探讨一下) when we get into speculating about the role of the critics in society.

For instance, western feminist artist managed to make art that reflects(reflected) women's lives and experiences to improve women's rights and impact on art throughout the 1970s(例子很好,充分论证了上面的小论点).

On the other hand, the critic also(这样可以表示转折吗
creates lasting value to the society. Above all(学习了 另一种首先的表示), the critic makes the artist reflect(用反映这个意思不合适吧?我觉得可以改为improve或者polish,它们和refine混搭比较好) and refine on their works. Just as the Roman critic Quintus Horatius Flaccus(例子学习学习了 put(啥意思?提出?而且与后面的时态不一致), the evaluation of a critic is like a grindstone and the creations of the artist(少了is like?) a knifee critic is not capable of cutting, but it sharpens the knife. Moreover, a good artist may be an excellent critic first if he wants to make contributions to society(既然是maybe,那也就有可能是
ke, Bruce Lee, the famous martial artist as an example, his criticism that traditional martial arts techniques were too rigid and formalistic to be practical played an influence in the creation of the eclectic martial art Jeet Kune Do. In addition, the critic assists the society with digging out the outstanding artist originally unknown to public. Shakespeare, an ordinary screenwriter before his death, his work has been studied by the whole society ever since Goethe and Samuel Coleridge found that he is virtually a great writer(这个例子很恰当 学习了).
tist and the critic are both conducive to bringing society something of lasting value. The artist can be a knife that used for cutting, while the critic is a grindstone which sharpens the knife. We can't ignore the value of the critic.
