242 The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.
"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

提纲:
1 The arguer first listed a decrease in number of students cheating as an indication of Groveton's honor code's success. However, it doesn't really hold water.
(1)First, the number reported is subject to doubt.
(2)even though the number is correct, it doesn't make sense to draw a conclusion that the honor code has proven far more successful
2 the survey is doubtable in itself
3 it is not well-reasoned to claim that other institutions should adopt the honor code system even if the honor code is successful in Groveton.

The argument take it for granted that Groveton's honor code is a success in preventing students from cheating and other institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton’s. The argument is seemingly reasonable but actually fallacious upon thorough reflection.

The arguer first listed a decrease in number of students cheating as an indication of Groveton's honor code's success. However, it doesn't really hold water. First, the number reported is subject to doubt. Is it the number reported reflect the reality? Students might adopt such sophisticated instruments that it was more difficult for the teachers to notice the students cheating. Students who are in fear of others' revenge are not inclined to notify a faculty member even if he finds that someone is cheating. Moreover, even though the number is correct, it doesn't make sense to draw a conclusion that the honor code has proven far more successful, simply based on the fact that the figure had dropped from 21 to 14. It is not a significant decrease after all.

The arguer then referred to a survey to support his assertion. Nevertheless, the survey is doubtable in itself. First, the arguer didn't provide details- which are of significant importance to validate a survey- about how many students are interviewed and how the survey was carried out. In addition, even if the survey was thoroughly made, although a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code, it is not a guarantee of what would happen in reality.

Also, it is not well-reasoned to claim that other institutions should adopt the honor code system even if the honor code is successful in Groveton. The Groveton's success might be related with its special particularities which other institutions may not have. For instance, if students and faculty members in Groveton can tolerate less with other's cheating, Groveton's honor code will be not necessarily applicable for other institutions.

In sum, the argument mentioned above is specious to say that the honor code has proven more successful and ignore the details of the survey as well. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information regarding whether the number reported is true and how was the survey carried out.

The argument take it for granted(说and后的那个take for granted还合理,但说G的也用这个词组就不合适了,因为作者是把其作为论据来提出的,可以用 cite之类的) that Groveton's honor code is a success in preventing students from cheating and other institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton’s. The argument is seemingly reasonable but actually fallacious upon thorough reflection(这个用法你确定不?倒是挺新颖的).

The arguer first listed(lists) a decrease in number of students cheating as an indication of Groveton's honor code's success. However, it doesn't really hold water(好词,但是 我怀疑它有点口语化,探讨一下). First, the number reported is subject to doubt. Is it the number reported reflect the reality?(1.用问句可以吗??? 值得讨论。2.你质疑这点 我觉得有点像耍赖的感觉,你看草版的同主题,就明白了,从别的方面来质疑其数字的正确性更有说服力) Students might adopt such sophisticated instruments(本来对这个词用在这里是表示质疑的 但查完MW后,确实有表示方法的意思,在这里提一下,因为我原来一直以为它应该是表示实物的方法的意思) that it was more difficult for the teachers to notice the students cheating. It is not a significant decrease after all.(前半句是个点 但后半句的论证不足,仅仅就凭不是大的下降这个理由,一是理由本身就站不住脚 二是应该在展开具体说说才行)

The arguer then referred to a survey to support his assertion. Nevertheless, the survey is doubtable in itself(好句 学习). First, the arguer didn't(手一抖 就缩写了吧要镇定啊 :lol ) provide details- which(不能把连字符和定语从句连着用吧,这里大可以去掉两个连字符) are of significant importance to validate a(应该是the  谨慎再谨慎) survey-(这块去掉连字符后确实有点乱,其实可以另起一句,用such as 开头,结构会清晰的多) about how many students are(were) interviewed and how the survey was carried out. In addition, even if the survey was thoroughly made, although a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code, it is not a guarantee of what would happen in reality(这个点我也写了 我觉得你这里在稍微举一下 reality不会做的例子会更好).

Also, it is not well-reasoned to claim that other institutions should adopt the honor code system even if the honor code is successful in Groveton. The Groveton's success might be related with its special particularities which other institutions may not have. For instance, if students and faculty members in Groveton can tolerate less with other's cheating(应该再加上其他的学校有可能比较宽松,关键是你得明确说出这种有比较的句子, 要不感觉话没说完 , 肯定的是 学校态度不同 这个点找的挺好), Groveton's honor code will be not(not be 吧) necessarily applicable for other institutions.

In sum, the argument mentioned above is specious to say(总感觉say口语化 而且词不达意 用conclude 或claim较好) that the honor code has proven more successful and ignore(ignores) the details of the survey as well. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information regarding whether the number reported is true and how was the survey carried out.
