It's a difficult question to answer which one gives society more value, the artist s or the critics. It's no doubt that the artist who create great works brought permanant value to our society. However, we could not overlook the important function of the critics.
Undoubtly,artisits are the inventors who invent great works reflecting the inspiration and creative minds. These great works always awake the common emotion of human beings. They are the spiritual wealth to all of us. It is Beethoven who composed the symphonies, Hero and Fate, and told us not to give up to the fate with his experience. He lost his hearing in his middle age. However, he insisted on fighting with his fate and used music to explain his feelings. It is Dickens who created vivid characters and told us the true life of the poor people. His sympathy and concerns of the society are contained in his novels. It is Van Gogh who painted the sunflowers with his special feeling of light and color to give us hope and courage. Thanks to these artists, their emotion and talents let the masterpieces with great value live immortally in the world.
However, sometime it’s difficult for the public to understand the internal mind beneath the works.Then the critics are needed to take this responsibility to convey the meanings of the artists to the public. The critics plays an important role between the public and the artists. When Van Gogh’s sunflowers came out, many people could only extol that it’s beautiful. Then, the critics estimates it with the well-trained eye. They exhumed the background of the painting and understood what meaning the artist entends to say and then conveyed it to the public. So now we could easily find the hope and power in the painting. Further proof are the movie commends. If the critics didn’t interpret the contents of the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, we may consider it to be just a kongfu film. The critics help us to learn the eastern culture contained in this film. On the other hand, the opinions from the critics can draw attention of the public to contact with the unknown works. For example, an unknown author has written a book. Even though the book is worthy reading, the public won’t choose to read it when it was put in hundreds of books. It’s efficient that the critics discover it and advise it to the public.
Moreover, the opinions critics feedback to the artists is acted as a filter which distinguish the dross from the essence. The impressionism was in great pression when it came into being. The critics at first criticize it as strange paintings and paid no attention to it. As time past, the critics has to concede impressionism is significant and can even be the milestone in the history of artist.
All in all, from the discussion above, we can easily get our conclusion that the artists play an important role in the creating of great works which show their ideas. The critics have also contributed greatly to the art who act as the bridge between the artists and the public and discover the potential lasting value of a work. Therefore, when we are extolling the value of an art work, we could not forger the critics who are also playing an irreplaceable role as the artists.
