Do technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics? Indisputably, with the rapid development of technology, every aspect of our daily life has changed dramatically, including the devices we use to communicate, and the vehicles through which we travel abroad. However, although technologies do have a vital effect, they still cannot determine social customs and ethics, for both social customs and ethics are products of a long history, and are influenced not only by technologies but also by culture, politics, environment and so on. Therefore, social customs and ethics cannot be fundamentally changed only because of the improvement of technology.

It is unquestionable that, from primitive society to modern society, social customs and ethics have changed drastically owing to the progress in technologies. The tools we use to see other objects can aptly illustrate this point. Primitive man first discovered fire to lighten things, then followed candles, and finally came light, invented by Edison. Every step in the process has had a huge impact on people’s daily lives and have influenced social customs and ethics to a large extent. Other instances like emails taking place of letters, televisions taking place of broadcasts, can all manifest the significant change technologies have brought to social customs and ethics.

What’s more, new technology can start new trends in the society and once the technology gets more and more popular among people, social customs and ethics will then be influenced more or less. For instance, the internet technology has just aroused a new trend among young people-shopping online. When the technology was first invented, it didn’t change people’s lives, however, when it gets popular and fashionable in society, the number of people shopping online then increased dramatically and the way people do their shopping was consequently affected.

However, the facts mentioned above can only demonstrate the “influence” technology has on social customs and ethics, not the “determination”. Although technology can influence them greatly, it cannot determine the way in which customs and ethics form and develop. On the one hand, customs and ethics are formed during a very long history, and are basically constant and unchangeable. They are not something that can be easily reshaped and developed by the variation of the outside world, but some traditions passed down from ancestors or some values and beliefs deep in mind. Confucius’s theory -"do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you"-is still the principle the Chinese people hold to interact with others. While muslims perhaps will never change their beliefs and values no matter how advanced the technology has developed.

On the other hand, there are also other indispensable factors affecting social customs and ethics, such as culture, political system, environment and significant events happened in history, like wars and revolutions. Black men were once fallen to slaves in history; consequently, there is always discrimination toward black people in society even after those black slaves have already won their freedom back. The discrimination is an important part of social customs and ethics, however, the formation of the discrimination has little to do with the improvement of technology. Therefore, it is unreasonable to conclude that technology can determine customs and ethics, for other factors can also influence them to a large extent, and perhaps even on a higher degree than technology.

To sum up, plenty of examples can give evidence to the fact that technology can influence social customs and ethics greatly. Besides, the trend that new technology aroused can also help to affect people’s customs and ethics. However, as customs and ethics are formed during a long history, and there are also other important factors influencing them, we cannot draw the conclusion that technology can not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics.
