In the era symbolized with high-developed technology, technology exerts a significant influence on people’s life and value system as well as the social customs. Yet, is it really the case that technology determines social customs and ethnics? As far as I am concerned, technology indeed affects human life style and social structure, however, it cannot determine them.

In the first place, technology brought about various ways to people's communication. Take the way people keep in touch with a close friend or a relative as a example, our ancestors could only get in touch with others by letters and it usually took several days to send the letters to the receiver. Yet, after the inauguration of telephone and computers, people can easily talk to anyone who is a long distance away based telephone and internet system. In addition, consider the different ways of trade; technology has achieved a faster and more efficient way to cope with dealings through high-developed vehicle and communication tools instead of the contract after a long time of ocean tour. These examples all well illustrate the changes in social customs after the coming of higher technology.

In the second place, social and people's ethics also significantly changed throughout the whole human history. One need not go further to see that the different attitudes towards women throughout history. Along with the wide information spread the world, people were more aware of liberty and equality of men and women. Once, women were regarded/considered as an inferior group, and their responsibilities are taking care of the old and young at home and giving birth to the next generation. Nevertheless, nowadays, after the feminist movement, an increasing number of women begin to work and occupy lucrative positions in factories and even government. Moreover, people do not regard them as a weaker group of our community again and do not have prejudice on women. Trough this we can see how considerably the technology has affected social ethics.

Since both people’s life condition and social ethics have been changed considerably, however, technology itself cannot determine social customs and ethics as the speaker asserts. Technology as a tool is used by people to make the world a better place for people to live in. Common sense compels us that any result and effect have several causes, so do the changes of social customs and ethics. Other terms, like people's value system and trends of the world revolution can also contribute these changes. Therefore, many factors all together determine the social customs and ethics, and it is unilateral to say it is only because of technology itself determine them.

To sum up, technology has greatly changed the way people communicate with each other and caused stark meanings about how our society regards certain terms. However, technology as a tool cannot determine social customs and ethics.
