65.The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."


The argument seems plausible that by acknowledging the preference of consumers from the magazine, the president should change their plans to focus more on domestic cheeses and stop importing cheese from other places. However, the argument is not well-reasoned as it seems like.

First, the Cheeses of the World magazine may not be realiable, as it is commercial and it might not be the main resources for general cheese information in the country. If the goal of the magazine is to earn profits, it might favor those who support it and patronize it. Thus, the results of the survey might not be uninterested enough. In addition, the theme and focus of the magazine have not been considered by the president. What if the magazine actually focus more on domestic cheese and usually offer more information about domestic cheese instead of imported one? If this is the case, most of the subscribers of the magazine are definitely those who fervor domestic cheeses. Thus, the survey does not show the whole picture of the general preference in the country.

Next, in the memo, the president also talks about the best-sellers in their newest store, which are all domestic cheeses. There might be a lot of reasons behind this results. For example, in this single store, there might be more domestic cheeses than imported ones, which attract consumers who fervor domestic cheeses more. Besides, the reasons why people buy more domestic cheeses in the chain of their cheese stores might be because that the quality of domestic cheeses in there is better than that of imported ones. In this case, no doubt domestic cheeses will be the best sellers.


Finally, the memo mentions that all five best-selling cheeses are from Wisconsin. It is possible that Wisconsin makes better cheeses than other places in the country, so people are more likely to buy cheeses which are made from there. By only focusing on domestic cheeses from a single state, the president might have a naroow view about the cheeses production in the whole country.

Overall, the argument, which seems logical and resonalbe, is actually implausible and illogical. The sources the president gets the information from might not be reliable at all, and the best-selling lists in one store could not represent the whole in the chain of cheese stores. In order to make a sounded decision, the president should look at the whole picture in the chain of cheese stores and the whole picture of the general preference in the country. The president should also evaluate the quality of the imported cheeses and compare it with that of domestic ones in the chain.
