For a long period of time, whether it is the artist or the critic who brings the society with something of lasting value is a complex question. Many people think it is the artists who create the lasting value, but the critic’s contribution also cannot be ignored.
Artist is a person who creates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. on the other hand, critic are the person who evaluates these production. Undoubtly, we can know it’s the genius artist who really make our life so colorful and even lead a mode of one generation, and their ideology influenced millions of people. The true value is people can know more themselves and widen their eyes through these works. They are the representation of human’s brightness and have lightened human’s civilization.
However,
we have to admit that it is the critic who explains the artist's work to the layman who has little sense about the art. As comparing to the whole mass of population, artist only is the minority part of it, thus, only few people have the ability to understand the deep value inside of the artist's work. However, the value of art should be evaluated by everybody. In that case, it is necessary to build a bridge between layman and artist. And critic, who publicizes the art to the layman, plays a role of that. Sometimes, it is because that the artist's work is not well appreciated by the critic which made the value of their work cannot be discovered by the majority. The famous Netherlandish painting artist Vincent Van Gogh is a typical of that. As his work was not well accepted by the previous critic, until about 20 years after he passed away, the significant value in his work is discovered by most of people. If the critic is able to learn the value a little earlier and provide it to public, the artist could be accepted during his life time and may be more valuable job would be created and therefore contribute more value to the society. In short, we should neglect the influence from critic as their work plays a critical role in the promoting of the value of the artist's work.
Whereas, critic can also make negative influence to the value of the art work. It is unfortunate but true that there are no flawless individual in the world. Critic will also make mistakes in the assessment of the art's value. As the function of bridge between layman and the artist, their misevaluation will inevitable misguide the majority and have significant negative influence to the art job's value. And it is also a possibility that the unwise assessment is made just according to few professor's judgment. It is the common sense that few professors’ opinion is not able to stand for everyone. In that case, critic's negative evaluation to the art world will definitely affect the public judgment and therefore decrease the value of work. What is worse, the critic with little responsibility will probably make assessment just relies on their like or dislike. This kind of behaviors is obviously unfair to the artist and will seriously intersect the correct evaluation of the value.
In sum, according to the discussion above, we can safely draw a conclusion that it is the artist whose work brings lasting value to the society, while the influence from critic should not be overlooked.
