TOPIC: ARGUMENT101 - The following appearedin a memo from the president of a company that makes breakfast cereals.

"In a recent study, subjects who atesoybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterollevels than subjects who ate no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cerealwith soy protein, we can increase sales by appealing to additional consumerswho are concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O shouldincrease company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of ourcustomers."

The author suggests that the Wheat-Oproduct should add soy protein, since it can both increase the company profitsand improve the customers' health. In addtion, the author provides the studythat the subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week hadsignificantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who didn't ate. However,the reasons or the argument suffers from the several fakes.

Firstly, the study the author providedseems some fakes. The subjects in the comparision study may not the absolutelythe same at the same time. In that case, the action that eating soybeans atleast five times per week may not lead to the conclusion that the subjects havelower cholesterol level. It seems possible that the subjects who ate soybeanswhile did more exercises, and the action that doing exercises leads theresults. Hence, the conclusion that eating soybeans can decrese the level ofcholesterol seems not the truth.

Secondly, although the study really provedthat eating soybeans can decreases the level of cholesterol, the conclusionthat add soy protein to the wheat-O cereal can improve the health of thecustomers needs more supports. Eating soybeans directly does not equal toeating the products with soy protein. The effect that soybeans can decrease thelevel of cholesterol may not only because of the soy protein. The author needsto provide more studies that prove the effect of eating soy protein can reallydecrease the cholesterol.

Thirdly, even adding the soy protein canreally help to decrease the level of cholesterol, it may not significantlyincrease the sales. As far as we know, the decision to buy the cereals doesn'tnot only depend on whether it can improve our health. The consumers mayconsider more factors such as the taste, the brands and the style of package.

In sum, the memo doesn't provide the enoughevidences and gives the fake reasoning to get the conclusion that the companyshould add soy protein to the Wheat-O cereals, since the reasons suffer fromthe insufficient study and the wrong attribution.
