TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

Standing on the survey, the author assume that domestics cheeses will be more and more popular and there will be more and more buyer, at the same time, because it were best-selling at our newest store last year the assumption that domestic cheeses will be well-selling at all the stores in our chain in future is fallacious. At last, without any survey the arguer can’t get the conclusion that we should discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheeses, assuming that we can’t improve profits from imported cheeses.
Firstly, the assumption from the survey can’t stand with analysis the survey shows that there is an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. On the one hand, this survey was made just among the subscribers of cheeses of the world magazine but there is no any information about its subscribers such as the number, age and district. On the other hand, from the survey, we only see there will be increasing preference for domestic cheeses. However, this doesn’t mean that the buyer will be increased because it is an complicated process from the thought to action which was influenced by many factors, for instance healthy condition, life level.
Secondly, although last year the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin we can’t predict the condition of demestic cheeses in future at all our stores. If there is a survey about the selling trends of domestic cheeses or there is a study about the selling situation at all our stores. We can judge this assumption that domestic cheeses are well-selling is right or wrong.
Thirdly, there is no information about imported cheeses but the arguer concludes that imported cheeses are not well-selling and should be discontinues. The arguer has a hasty mistake.
Finally, based on the above assumption, the author think domestic cheeses will be profit. Even though all the assumption made by author are successful, this conclusion can’t got. First, cost of domestic cheeses limits profit, the author provides no information about the cost of domestic cheeses. Second, the selling strategy is so important that it can determine the profits of a company from the goods and the number of the profits.
In sum up, the arguer provides insufficient evidence and information. He/she can’t convince to discontinue stocking of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. He/she
must do more work on the selling trends of domenstic cheeses and imported cheeses and the selling condition of all our stores.
