OPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

In this argument, the arguer draws two conclusions in haste that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required while men should be given other kinds of pain medication and researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women. These two conclusions are both obviously unconvincing due to the reasons below.

First, the credibility of the report which suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another and doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications is doubtful. There is no more details about the report and where the report comes from. So we can not regard this report as a premise.

Second, the fact that the women feel less pain than the men in the research which administered the same dosage of kappa opioids to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted is probably caused by the different characters between the men and women rather than the different pain experience between them. The women may be more tough and can bear much pain. Besides, the number of people having be researched is too small to represent all the situations. moreover, the author does not say that every woman reported feeling less pain than every man, so the result is not suitable for each case.

Furthermore, even if when teeth extracted, kappa opioids cause less pain to women than to men, the case can not be spreaded to every case. And the research even can not prove kappa opioids is the best choice in this certain case for women, so of course it can not be taken as the best choice for women whenever pain medication is needed. As such, kappa opioid is probably can be used for men in some cases rather than getting rid of it in grain.

Finally, even if it is true that men and women experience very differently from one another, we do not need to reevaluate all medications' effects on men versus women. Maybe many medications are already very mature in this aspect and only pain medications have this problem. So it is quite a waste to reevaluate all the medications.

To sum up, the conclusions in this argument is misleading. To make the argument well reasoned , the author should further prove the credibility of the report and take another more convincing research to support it. In addition, the author should consider the problem more roundly.

RETROSPECT

In this argument, the arguer draws two conclusions in haste that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required while men should be given other kinds of pain medication and researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women according to a report and a research. However, these two conclusions are both obviously unconvincing due to the reasons below.

First, the credibility of the report which suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another and doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications is doubtful. There are no more details about the report and where the report comes from.

The women may be tougher and can bear more pain. Besides, the number of people having been researched is too small to represent all the situations. Moreover, the author does not say that every woman reported feeling less pain than every man, so the result is not suitable for each case.

Furthermore, even if when teeth extracted, kappa opioids cause less pain to women than to men, the case can not spread to every case. And the research can not prove kappa opioids is the best choice in this certain case for women, so it certainly can not be taken as the best choice for women whenever pain medication is needed.

To make the argument well reasoned, the author should further prove the credibility of the report and take another more convincing research to support it. In addition, the author should consider the problem more roundly.
