"Too much emphasis is placed on role models. Instead of copying others, people should learn to think and act independently and thus make the choices that are best for them."
The speaker asserts that people should not always copy role models that have been emphasized too much in current society. While models' experiences and choices are indeed beneficial for keeping people from repeating their own mistakes and providing additional ways people may not at all think about before, my standpoint is that people should pay more attention to learning to think and act independently and make their own decisions, in light of the diversity and difference between people, and because creation usually is derived from independent thinking and action.
The main reason why people should think and act independently and make their own decisions is that the internal and external factors may be totally different for role models and normal people. Thus, direct copying may lead to completely different results. For one thing, internal elements, for example, characteristics, interests and gifts, which may largely determine the efficiency and consequence of things we do, and also affect the efforts we may make, are variable among people. Based on interest and gift for Kongfu, Jackey Chen can keep training for 18 hours a day during his early years and do every single dangerous action in his fabulous movies all by himself; on the contrary, it will be a disaster and dangerous gamble of life for someone who is not at all a fan of Kongfu and has difficulty in action harmony to do the same thing. However, if he/she gives in copying Jackey's model of life, seriously think about his/her own interest and talent, and insist his own way of living, there may be one more successful pianist, pop singer, writer, or banker.
Further more, external elements also play essential role in deciding which is better for us, copying the thoughts and behaviors of model people who may live in totally different circumstance and time, or make our own choices what kind of life we want to live and what things we are eager to do, depending on our actual living conditions and environment. As an Chinese saying goes, bad times make heroes, the difficult time in China, during which the nation was attacked and people were killed and suffered from hunger and poverty, made Xun Lu an amazing writer and further a national hero. Just because he experienced the hard time, he saw millions of people killed, he felt the weakness and fright of Chinese people then, his anger, strength and willingness to heal the nation has been evoked. That is also why he was able to create so many fabulous and encouraging articles, which might never be written by a person living in current peaceful time and enjoying a comfortable life. Hence, if one insisted to follow Xun Lu's article style and contents, he/she would destined to fail. In such case, only by thinking and acting independently can people create new and amazing ideas and things that perfectly fit modern time and their own lives.
Another reason why copying of role model should not be encouraged is that the improvement of society requires creative thinking and behavior. Annotation is the soul of a nation. Given the assumption that everyone is copying former people's idea and action, how creative thoughts, inventions and investigations can be made? If Edison copied our ancestors' view and behavior, always took it for granted to light a candle at night, now we might still live in darkness. By the same token, Hong Kong would never politically belong to China if Xiaoping Deng followed former successful politician's idea that a nation can only have one political policy. Taken all above into account, although role models provide us with precious references, only independent thinking and action can guide people to make best choices and lead to florescence of society. |
