TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

According to this statement, the speaker asserts that people's attitudes and interests can be reveals by the way they look, dress, and act. Moreover, the appearance and behavavior of people reflect much about a society's ideas and values. As for me,I agree insofar that people convey their attitudes and interests by the way they look, dress, and act. However, the speaker begs question by overlooking the complexity of a society's ideas and values.

Admittedly,an individual's opinions and attitudes to some extent can be concealed by the way he or she looks, dresses and acts.Take politicians for example, they all dress the similar suits----black or gray, act as gentle men, look as if they eagerly want to save the social problems. However, they may hold completely different attitudes to the problems that they advocate to solve in the bottom of their heart. In a not dissimilar way, providing that you drop a friend happenly without telling him,he must seem to be happy with your visit. In fact your deed disturbs his plan and he feel a little annoying.

Though true feelings lie deeply in our heart,we are able to,as long as we pay attention to the details of those behaviors, deduce them from the way people look, dress, and act.The saying that eyes are the window of one's hearts is used to point out the significance of eyes on the reflection of one's attitude. For example,we all have the experience that our eyes cannot focus on other's when we are lying. On the contrary, when someone are talking about things we are interest in,our eyes will turn to the speaker unconsciously even if we pretend not to care about it.When it comes to the way we dress,it was the same. The artists,a group of people appreciate the beauty from another even contrary perspective, always dress weirdly. So the way they dress is the signal
of their attitude to beauty. Moreover, what is your impression about the interviewees who wears a T-shirt and a pair of
slipper?Of course ,we do not trust him for the reason that his appearance tells us he paid no emphasis on the interview as well as the job.

However.when it comes to the whole of society, this is not the case at all.As a number of people live in the sociey, and hold different views,a society's ideas and values are far mor complex than that of an individual. It is arbitrary to judge the society's values only by the means of the way people look, dress and act. For instance, lots of similarity could be found between Chinese and Japanese in the way people look, dress and act,but we cannot neglect the fact that do obvious differences of social values and ideas exist between the two countries.Furthermore,As the development of democracy in mordern world, more freedom is allowed for us to hold different views,to dress what we prefer, and to mimic whom we adore. Thus,it is more and more difficult to deduce the society's true values and ideas from the appearance and behavior of its people.

Besides,a certain society's values are also reflected by many other aspects of the nation.First of all,the law gives numerous informations that help us to recognize the whole society. For example, the fact that personal properities are protected by American Constitution indicates the society esteems the personal rights.Similarly, culture is another important tool,by which we realize
different values among different countries:Chinese love their families,American yearn towards freedom,German are precise. What is more ,education, religion, art and technology also play vital roles in understanding the society's values.

In sum,I concede that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests.Nonetheless,to the society, the speaker overrates the importance of the appearance and behavior of its people to the whole society.Furthermore, the ideas and values of a society can also be reflected by other factors such as law, culture, education and so. on.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT17 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.

"Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ-which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks-has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."

In this argument, the arguer advocates that it is wrong for the town council to switch from EZ Disposal to ABC Waste. To justify this claim, the arguer provides the evidence that EZ collects trash twice a week while ABC collects only once. Moreover,EZ owns more trucks than ABC does.Meanwhile, last year's survey shows that 80 percent of respondents were
satisfied
with EZ's performance. This argument is problematic for several reasons mentioned below.

To begin with,it is arbitrary to judge the service only by the fact that EZ collects trash more frequently than ABC does.In fact, the arguer fails to take into accounts the possibility that
there is
no need to collect trash twice a week.If so,collecting more frequently cannot be an advantage for us to be considered. In additon, even if ABC collects trash only once a week,it does not mean that its service is more worse. What is possible that ABC collects trash thoroughly every time, thus it serves only once a week.

what is more, the arguer assumes that EZ ,rather than ABC, provides more trucks to collect trash for the town. However,no evidence whatsoever is shown to substantiate this assumption.Maybe twenty trucks
are quite enough for the trash collection. Moreover, the arguer maybe too hasty to conclude that the additional trucks will be used in Walnut Grove town.It is quite possible that EZ also services in other towns which require many trucks. On the contrary, all the trucks ABC owns can be used only for Walnut Grove town.If so,we have to doubt the arguer's assumption that EZ provides more trucks than
ABC does.

Additionally, the arguer cites the result of last year's survey which is open to doubt.First, lacking the information about the number of citizens surveyed,it is impossible to assess the validity of the results.Second,Were they chosen randomly for the survey? How many citizens responded the survey?Unless the arguer provides such informations,we cannot believe the result of the survey.Furthermore,ABC never contracts for trash collection service in Walnut Grove town, and the citizens only experienced the service of EZ.Therefore, they never compare the service of both companies.Though they satisfy the EZ's work,it does not mean that they dissatisfy ABC's service in the future.

Besides,we cannot neglect the other factors which are equal important. For example,Maybe the way ABC collects trash is much more scientific and helpful for our environment.Maybe EZ neglects to recycle trash. If so,it is better to choose ABC in the long run.

In summary, this argument has several patent flaws which render it logically unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide evidence that EZ's service is much better than ABC's.Additionally, other factors such as environmental factors should be taken into account.

语言很好了,词汇不错,句式也很多样,表达也流利,以我的水平也看不出什么语法问题。唯一想说的是issue和argument的开头太相似是不是不大好?
