I103(7) 历史"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives." 研究历史的价值只体现在这种研究和我们的日常生活相关时。
命题:value of the study of history has value when it is relevant to our daily lives
我的态度:有保留的支持
1.the study of history has value to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives for it exemplify the code to follow. We may learn lessons from the past (War, environmental protection, tyranny, slavery)
2. The history not in direct correlation with the daily live also tend to be fascinating in the eye of some artists. (music, architecture, literature)
3. the history is not stationary. What seems irrelevant to the daily life today turn out to be in close connection to the life to come. (Environmental protection, what kind of plants are viable in certain region. water resource)

People tend to concede that the main purpose and value of study of history is to serve the people nowadays. I partly agree in that by the study of history we may learn the lesson from the past and thus figure out the appropriate way of development. However, the fact that some study will not directly related to the daily life and the ceaseless progress of social development we need to reconsider it.
In the first place, to make the study practical and more effective, historians tend to focus their effort on affairs that are in direct relation with the daily life or some solution point to the issue at hand. A case in point is that, the leaders sometime will turn to historians for reference when it comes to the territorial disputation in that territorial disputation, in most cases, are intertwined with the religion, a too complex issue that can only be handled through the research of history. In such case, people make do with the limited knowledge of history to grapple with the solution against the problems at hand. For the history research is rewarding in a short term. In the case abovementioned, the study of history will yield a satisfactory solution that is, too the most, tend to solve the disputation.
In addition, history mirrors the present to some extent. Such issue like war, epidemic influenza, and racial discrimination may be drastically settled after resorting to the historical event available. The recent measure taken by the Chinese government in response to the HIVI flu is the case in point. Physically and psychologically suffered from the excruciating disaster of SARS, the Chinese government has gain abundant experience and learns enough lessons so that any other similar flu is no big deal. The study of history proves to be beneficial in cautioning the upcoming danger and useful to provide more advices if necessary.
Whereas, some study bears no evident relation with the daily life are also carried out by those historians for the artistic reasons. As we know, arts of any kind root from the research in the past. It is a common practice to learn the music by acquire at the beginning the historical knowledge of the famous musician or the well-known masterpieces. Not only for the purpose of appreciating, but for establishment of the fundamental theoretical basis upon which the further study are piled. The same goes to other form of art such as architecture and literature. With regard to studies of this kind, no one may claim any daily bearings with the world at present, while they are carried out for the purpose of autistics.
Finally, the social development is too precarious that is it entirely implausible to set a code whereby huge or marginal interest is measured to the history study in terms of our daily life. As the time slip by, what appear to be relevant to daily life fade away while what are deemed marginal originally are casted in to limelight. To illustrate, environmental protection, a heated issue under discussion nowadays, can hardly earn any attention decades ago, let alone in the time memorial. The historical study of the distribution of plants in the past, government may solve the dissertation at the lowest cost.
To sum up, study of history is beneficial to our daily life. Nevertheless, the biased historical study merely concerned with the current life will undermine the value of the study since other work like art are hampered and potential benefits are deprived. |
