The author asserts that it is valuable only when the studying of history is relevant to our daily lives. In my view, I tend to agree that studying of history is valuable when it is relevant to our daily lives; however, I also agree that even if it is irrelevant to our daily lives, it has its value and plays an important role in promoting the development of the society.
On the one hand, when the study of history is relevant to our daily lives, it authentically takes a significant part. Through learning from the history, we can benefit a lot from it. It can inspire us. For example, consider the example of Lin Hao, who is a quack (earthquake) relief hero in Wenchuan earthquake of China. Facing the earthquake, he, as a student of 9 ages, saved two unconscious classmates in the earthquake. His brave behaviors inspire all the people of China.
Through studying the history relevant to our daily lives, we can learn some
principles from it. For instance, in realm of sports, Michael Schumacher has won seven time world championship in his life. If we study his experience of growth, we can know that it is gift and endeavor that make him a success. So, we can learn a principle that If an athlete want to become great, both gift and endeavor are necessary.
上两段所提及的例子貌似与主题“history relevant to daily life”无关,不够典型,更像是英雄事迹。
On the other hand, even if the history is irrelevant to our daily lives, through studying it, we can also benefit a lot from it for all human beings. Studying the history of the development of the society, we can gain instrumental experience from history and know what we should to do for a more prosperous future of mankind. For example, in areas of the history of economic growth, through studying the history of industrial development from the Industrial Revolutionary to now, we realize that mankind faces a myriad of environmental problems-such as global warming, over-deforestation and so on-which are ascribed to the fast economic growth. By studying the history, we realize the importance of protecting environment; thus, idea of sustainable development is a base policy of many modern countries. In short, studying the history irrelevant to our daily lives can tell us what we should do and what we should not do for the purpose of creating a bright future.
是否environmental protection及industrial revolution与daily life无关呢?经历了industrial revolution后人类生活水平得到改善。
In area of technological development, studying the history plays a significant role in making us understand the function of technology profoundly. In ancient times, people wrongly assumed that technology had no demerits; however, through studying the history of technological development. We realize that technology is a two-edged sword. For example, consider the technology of biological engineering, anyone would agree that biological engineering bring a revolutionary influence in humans' health; however looking back to history, chemical and biological weapons were used in war and eventually brought huge sufferings to the people involved in the war. In short, through studying the history of technological development, we can realize that technology is two-edged sword and it is very important that how we utilize it properly to serve the world.
此段提到结论technology是把双刃剑,作为study of history的achievements之一无可厚非。但作为value提出的话,个人认为有点牵强。况且technology性质不好界定,好像也属于relevant to daily life的吧。
In sum, studying the history, whether it is relevant to our daily lives or not, is valuable. When the history is relevant to our daily lives, through studying it, we can gain inspiration and some principles which is important for us; when studying the history irrelevant to our daily lives, we can know better that how to follow a correct road of societal development in areas of both economic growth and technological development.
这篇文章确实很难,难就难在daily life的定义,我觉得和当代人的生活息息相关,不可缺少的,就是history relevant to life (technology, medical care, politics, environmental)。
