TOPIC: ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

History, as the most precious treasure recording the entire process of people evolution, serves to tell people every image of the past. So, just as the speaker's implicit assertion, understanding people living in two different periods is one of the benefits of study history. And I also agree to the broad allegation that people in history are the same in some cases. But, looking back to the long past history, I do believe that there are more differences than the same between the people living in different eras. And, instead of the chief benefit, breaking such illusion takes only a small part of benefits in the study of our history.

First of all, the chief benefit of study the history, in terms of the whole society, is to lead our human stepping forward correctly and directly, which is much more complex than help compare of people's characters of different time. As we know, history is like a mirror reflecting the past which serves to show us all the mistakes our ancestor have made. So it can help us avoid going the wrong way again when stepping forward. Consider the military equipment race, between the America and the Soviet Union, during the cold war period, which is definitely a big mistake and cause a serious scare in the world. So, today, nearly all the countries in the world are cooperating in preventing such dangerous race happening again. And also that's why we can see the USA and the Russia have both conceded to reduce the amounts of the nuclear weapons in order to making a peaceful and better environment for the world development.

The second point in contention with the speaker's assertion is the illusion that people in different periods are nearly the same. Firstly, comparing the apparent aspects of people in different periods, we can see tremendous difference between them. It is obviously that, with the development of the society and humanity, nearly all the daily life respects-from the dressing and food to the living habit and style-have significant changed. One apt illustration is the new generation today, such as the B-boys or B-girls or even the hackers which are all due to our high development of both culture and technology. It is hard to imagine that how can the people living a life depending on hunt in the past being the same with now days people.
And what more important is the big difference of people's inside thought and spirits in two historical periods. For example, before the Renaissance, the European dark domination and society limits almost all the people's thought and creativity. It was the Renaissance that opened an new era and liberate all the people's mind. And from that on, there came a boom of culture prosperity. In fact, it is the social environment that determines the people's characters in two periods. From our history we can know that as long as the society go one big step forward, the people would changed as while ,like the first or the second industry revolution impact on our thought and spirit.

In the final analysis, in some cases, I concede that the study of the history may reveal something same of the people such as the hardly changed human nature. Even though, we can not make the conclusion that people in different time are not different and it is also groundless to ignore the other more important benefit of study history.
