The author suggests that all students of a nation should study the same national curriculum until they enter college rather than allow schools in different parts of the nation to determine which academic courses to offer. Although in this way, what they study can be determined to be the same, some shortcomings exist. I would partly agree with the author's idea.

The aim to require all students to study the same national curriculum is to assure that they can receive the same knowledge - language, science, art, history included in each stage of their development, learn the same basic skills to meet the needs of society if they work after graduation, follow the same moral requirements and behave properly. This is really important to some nations whose overall education quality is low and the local governments can not afford enough money to cultivate an adequate curriculum. This is also true to some nations who can afford these fees, but since the situation of all part of the nation is almost the same, it is a waste of money to cultivate local curriculum. To nations who have many different peoples, this can help them to communicate and with each other better and understand more about others.

However, a common curriculum that is also an exclusive one would pose certain problems, which might outweigh the benefits noted above. Firstly, in some nations who have many different peoples and the local difference is obvious, the restricted demand of using the same national curriculum may cause conflicts instead of meeting their needs. The reason is that although they are in one nation, they may speak different kinds of languages, have different understanding of life, follow different moral criterion and share little in history with others. In this situation, different curriculum is not a must to them. Secondly, who will determine the final version of the curriculum? There is no denying that education is of vital importance to the whole nation, a wrong direction will leads to disastrous results hard to imagine. Can this curriculum really meet the needs of both students and society, or just the needs of the authority? If we can not make sure the quality of national curriculum, our aim is hard to achieve.

In addition, we should respect the choice of different part of the nation, maybe we can come up with a national curriculum, and let the local governments and its people to decide whether they will us them or make an local curriculum which will better meet their needs.

To sum up, the situation differs a lot between nations, we can not make a certain judgment taking all these factors into consideration. Both national curriculum and local curriculum have their advantages and disadvantages. Before making their choices, people must balance the pros and cons based on their local situation.
